Frick Freddie--I too lived on the Hayward. Here's what you do: Get a Tanker of Gorilla Glue. About 8000 gallons. Drill a hole 20 Km down, put the pipe in the hole and pump away. You'll be good for another 29 years. By then you'll be drooling into a tube in some home down in Goleta. Somebody else's problem by then. Drink now, drool later. Trust me on this.

Fred thanks for the report, and I 2nd what CC said. Did you prehaps have a heart rate monitor on? It might have been useful to see if your heart rate dropped. I've konw several folks whose heart rates have dropped off a cliff and they couldn't get it back up no matter what. Without the ability to pump blood to the muscles may have been your issue. Good luck figuring it out, for me I learn something new everytime as he journey continues - which is (for me) what it's all about. Train Safe!

Okay, so some pretty amazing athletes have resided on the yellow page at one point or another, but I have to take a moment to be in awe of my friend FFO, Esq. Scores of marathons, century rides and more IM's than almost all of us. As I age, I am more and more in awe of what the dude is able to accomplish. I suppose it's a benefit to him that he is old enough to have met Ponce de Leon personally and to lifted some of his secrets, thus allowing him to do the incredible things he continues to do. But I can't imagine being able to perform at the level he does now when I'm in his AG. Hell, I can't do what he does at my age and haven't been for years. His passion for athletics, his mental toughness and his determination are truly exceptional. And, in the immortal words of Lili von Shtupp (Madeline Kahn) in Blazing Saddles, WHAT A NICE GUY. So, three cheers (and fifteen schnitzengruben) for Fred.

California International Marathon 2011 --Race Report -- This year is the last year for the historic qualifying times for the Boston Marathon. Starting next year, each age group has to run 5 minutes faster. I have qualified twice for Boston at CIM and have gone to Beantown once. It was a blast so I thought I get my third BQ and go back to Boston in 2013. I would have to run 4:15; next year it will be 4:10. I drove up to Sacramento on Saturday and met my friend Jean at the Expo. We just hung around at her place in the afternoon and made arrangements to meet our friend Betty at the race Sunday morning. After Jean’s fabulous turkey casserole, I hit the sack about 9 pm. I got up at 4 and did my regular pre-race routine. Rich drove us to the race start where we met Betty. The weather was just perfect for a marathon: cold at the start and warming gradually all morning. Jean and Betty said they were not really in shape to try to get a BQ; they felt they could finish around 4:45. After getting out of the port-a-potty about 5 minutes before the race start I fell in line behind the 4:10 pace group. I figured if I could just keep them in sight, I would make my qualifying time. It took about two minutes to get to the starting line after the race began; there were about 7,000 runners. I figured if I could keep a 9:20 – 9:30 pace, I’d be fine. Before this, I had always gone out too fast at CIM and then faded at the end. This time I would properly pace myself. For the last several months I have had orthopedic issues with my left knee and right ankle. They had been bothersome during training so I was concerned that something may go really wrong during the race. My legs felt great at the start, but . . . I kept a steady pace up to the halfway point; I passed 13.1 miles at 2:06. That would give me a margin of only about three minutes to be able to finish by 4:15. I knew that if there were any mishaps, I could burn through three minutes very easily. Then it happened: I looked at my watch about mile 14 and saw that I was running 10 minutes a mile! I got focused and back on track. But no matter how diligent I was to maintain the proper pace, I continued to get slower and slower and slower. My legs just would not go any faster. I thought about walking a bit to try to recover, but my legs felt like if they stopped what-could-be-charitably-called running, I could not get started again. Several thousand people passed me after mile 18. By now, I just wanted to stay ahead of Jean and Betty. But I ran the whole way. I knew that my BQ was gone, but when the 4:45 pace group blasted by me, I knew that all I had left was to finish. Except for my legs falling off a cliff, I had no other issues at all during the run: I was hydrated, my stomach was not acting up, my arms did not hurt, my knee and ankle caused not a problem; I was not freaking out mentally. I tried all the tricks and techniques I could think of to get my lets to turn over faster, but it was hopeless. I puttered to the finish line at 4:45. Betty had passed me unseen and finished a few minutes before me. Jean came in just about the same time I did. I consoled myself with having run the entire race, While this was one of my slowest marathons, I have managed to finish about 40 so far and going once to Boston to boot. Other than very tight calves, I felt fine after the race. I am never hungry after an event like this, but I really wanted something to eat! We all went out to lunch an hour after finishing. It was great to have spent the day with friends and their partners I have known for years.

Joe! Great news on the airpoints! Jen and I were last in the States when Lucy was three and Hope around 16 months. We also came over when Lucy was around eight months. The younger they are the easier they are to look after on the flight given it goes through the night. They get a bassinet and you get a bulkhead row to stretch out! We would love for you guys to come over! If you're keen you should come camping with us (all the crap supplied by the Harrisons) next Christmas and New Year at Hahei - http://www.hahei.co.nz/abouthahei.html We can go shoot some fish in the face and tell Bruce all about it!

Many years ago, duration records were all the rage. Duration records were eliminated (I believe in the 1920's) due to the number of people killed when they fell asleep in the air after 40 plus hours (AFAIK) using ridge lift.

Date: Monday November 28th, 2011 15:14 Comment 222245
softrider! of @ email: @
Those records are for the size of sailplane I fly - 15m wingspan. When you get into the larger wingspans, up to about 25 or 26m, the speeds go up again. 290 kph over a 100 km closed triangular course. 225 kph over a 300 km closed triangular course. On a triangular course, the shortest leg can't be any less than 28% of the overall distance. This prevents people from just running a straight line down a mountain ridge.

Date: Monday November 28th, 2011 15:08 Comment 222244
softrider! of @ email: @
Hey, Sparko! No, I hadn't heard of that flight. If the wind is blowing from the right direction, ridge lift is one of the most consistent sources of lift for us. It permits relatively high speeds and you can cover large distances. One flight I had this year was 450 km and I averaged 140 kph. It pales in comparison to some of the world records... How about a 300 km closed triangular course averaging 188 kph! Or the 100 km closed triangular course at 249 kph!! WOW.

What disturbs me most, more than the lie about tainted meat, is that plasticizer was found in his blood before and after the positive clenbuteral test. That tells me that they transfuse early to set up their base numbers and transfuse later to race and their numbers match. Plasticizer is evidence that blood was stored in a plastic container or syringe at some point. Cheat early and cheat often!
