Tina, there are lots of health care options outside of work. Expensive, but they exist. Being young, healthy, athletic all help. Unfortunately, if you get to travel to "exotic" places, where the poor exist, may work against you. Start checking various associations (church, USAT (hahah, but seriously, I think they do have some options), and also check with your current provider on post COBRA options.) Don't let that stop you. When it looked like we were going to be on my wife's COBRA, she signed me up for an AARP card to check out their insurance as an option. (Either that or it was her subtle way of telling me I'm old now. Damn thing is worthless. No discounts at Hometown Buffet or on Polident)

If I take this job with ECLOF, I'm at the mercy of COBRA again...which is fine for 18 months, but then what do I do...stop caring about the world's poor so that I can get a job that will let me get health insurance? Nice way for the world to revolve, isn't it...

tina of @ email: @
Although I ended up LOVING my job at Starbux, I initially only took it because my COBRA from the Fed was going to run out and could not find anyone to insure me. true story. Then, when I left sbux, I at least then had the security of knowing I had another 18 months of 'new' COBRA.

All I know is that I fall under the 'definitely uninsurable' category and can only get health insurance through an employer. I'd rather not have my life ruled and directed by my ability to have health insurance, so I'm all for a public option or something on that order...

I have 3 of 4 booties remaining from last year - didn't put them on her this morning, but once out there, thought I totally should have. will be ordering another 'set' but until then, she has three to use and one paw will be slathered in vaseline :)

Date: Thursday December 10th, 2009 5:50 Comment 201036
ray of @ email: @
If you don't have booties for Sahara I would recommend slathering her paws in Vaseline. It will protect against the ice and salt and will wear off by the time you get back so you don't grease the loft.

I actually met a dude just recently who also has a background in finance and does a lot of non-profit work. Also, he sold his biz in MN and moved to Cali in 2001 to do just this. He is now back in MN. He works to get clean water to communities like the one you are in. He and I are planning on teaming up because we both think we can totally help each other out (once I get the ECLOF thing). VERY EXCITING!! :)

Excuse the serious post but I had a very coll experience today. Visited some very rural villages in Malawi and watched some water pumps being installed. One pump provides clean drinking water for 250 people. The people we met were amazing but I could never live as they do. One toilet in the village, one water pump, mud huts with thatched roofs, no TV, no radio, no newspaper, no internet, no possessions other than livestock, some clothes, shoes & cooking pots. They live on what they can grow (corn in this area). And yet the women and children walk around dancing & singing & seem happy. Certainly an eye opening experience. Tina would love it! Check out pumpaid.org for more info...

Drive-by post... Busy at work... Selling some homes... Spending a lot of time refinishing the cockpit of the new plane. Lots of sanding, scrubbing, scraping - with a ton of painting to come in the next couple of weeks. The trailer is going to be repaired (broken frame as it turns out) and recovered with new fibreglass. The canopy, instrument turtle deck, all seat pans / side panels, pockets, stick boot, assorted screws and material has now taken over my home office. Prepping the seat pans for some light fiberglass repairs. Oooiiiii. Can't wait to finish everything. Redid some HVAC in the house basement. Repainted master bedroom. And so on and so forth... Merry Christmas, everyone! :-))

Empress Fabulous, I read 200766 as meaning wanting a married dude is high maintenance...as you can see from Tiger's dilemma, it's pretty lowbrow. The trick to a heated toilet seat is just make sure your roomate or significant other sits on it first and takes awhile. I can give you all sorts of hints on how to constipate him so he takes awhile and warms it up good for you.

I think "smartphone" basically means any phone that does phone stuff and interwebs stuff.

Just to clarify, the "black hose of love" was not a reference to T. Woods....late!

Yep, Swoosh, smart phones include Blackberry, I-Phone, others. The applications are the best! Laters. :-)

Ok, I've got to go put the hubby into the car as he has a date today with the "black hose of love". Of course, he picked the day a blizzard is forecast for his colonoscopy. Fortunately, the hospital is only 7 miles away. We may be walking home post-procedure...you all stay warm! lats.

I know, Laura! It's going to be mostly for texts and emails. Not so much for talking. Because, you know, I hate talking. ;-)

Swooshie, there are some really cool Aps on the smart phones for medical use: Epocrates and Davis Drug Guide are two of my favs!

AT&T has very good coverage in urban areas, but it is pretty poor in rural (South Dakota) areas. Lots of dropped calls and slow up loads. Best to check with folks in your town.

Boop! I need your expert opinion on blackberrys for "international use" - Laura, the blackberry is employer-required...I tried to fight it, but no luck!!

Saw this ad – “This season's favorite gift for the older people in your life, Susan Boyle's debut CD only $8.99” – if I find this under my tree I’m gonna be pizzed.

However, be aware that I don't think there is an iPhone or Balckberry app that will warm your toilet seat.

I have Verizon and get good coverage in general. I think just about every carrier has blackberries, so go with the company that has the best coverage in the mtns. Ask your co-workers. I'm sure a bunch of them have smartphones.

so, I need to get a Blackberry and affiliated service. Many of you have these, can you recommend a good model of phone and service provider? Thanks!

I'm thinking about getting one of those Colt Tactical .22 M4 Carbines. Prices are pretty reasonable online I can get one for about 530 bucks and can shoot 100 LR's for less than 5 bucks. Friggin 5.56/45 Nato's are friggin 10 times that. 8)
