WOOO-HOO! “The enormity of artistic and cultural opportunity paired with outdoor activity make the Minnie-apple a standout city,” says Annie W. Mathisen, a 35-year-old attorney who was born in Minneapolis-St. Paul and then returned as an adult because of the area’s high quality of life. “We can boast having inventive minds, from Lucent to Prince. I think Minneapolis fosters an environment where intelligence is valued and constantly fed—no matter what your mind is hungry for,” she says.

FFO, that is a very cool heirloom to keep! I've found similar stuff: my dad's Navy papers, Mom's Univ. of Minn letter sweater from the 1940's (swimming), tennis rackets from the 1950's, golf clubs, etc. That is all manageable. The hard part are the thoughtless but well-meaning comments from neighbors who just happen to be in the neighborhood. [yes, I am keeping the house. No, I am not selling, No, we are not giving away "keepsakes". Gawd ]

Laura - I hate cleaning out family stuff like that. I want to keep every thing but I know I will never use it. I just went through an old suitcase on Saturday we wanted to sell at a yard sale. There were family documents I had NEVER seen before, including the Canadian birth certificate in French for my grandfather who died back in 1964!! I kept that but got rid of everything else. It's heartbreaking work. But some of this stuff I want to pass on to our grandkids

tina - 15 years ago I decided to ride my bike to work instead of driving or having Nancy drop me off all the time. I did not know how it would work out at the time. It was one of the best decisions I ever made. I estimate I save about $400 per month when you add parking at my building - now $200/month; car payments, gas, insurance, maintenance. Not to mention having to sit in traffic all cooped up. I ride rain or shine. But granted we don't have much snow here!! After a hard, stressful day at the office, a nice ride home in the cool evening air works wonders. Just my .02 worth.

any comments as to what might be the biggest pain in the ass with not having a car? I walk to work and have superb access to the buses. No kids to transport. Grocery shopping I do like MAYBE 'big time' once a month to costco...could do the hourly car rental thing there... I'm not in school anymore, the geneva gig needs no car... hmmmm....

Ach! Phats is only a legend. A Norse god like Odin, Loki, Thor, and Balder. It is not possible for any human to possess all of the strengths of Phats and have the soul of a man. More likely a spirit like wind, or fire, or earth. “One that is here when he is not. And in motion whilst being still.” No I do not believe in this Phats. The tales are too great for belief. The stories, while great epics of heroism, are too fantastic. And to those who claim to have met this Phats in the flesh, I say “You have been deceived by your own desire for something greater than this earth can offer. And these tales of ST, the Warrior form the Sun who battled great demons with only one ring until he left to rule in the high mountains. A Master of the Earth who knew the deep secrets below the surface of the planet. Again, I chuckle that you believe these tales in this age of the internet and technology where the feats of man are in the distant past and the virtual age is upon us.

TINA! DUDE! Don't buy a TV man--you have a car to buy. I'm thinking a nice Armada, maybe a more traditional Suburban. Only problem is that there's no V-10 option. The Expedition is a little on the small side, so don't get that. You could go with one of the last US made Hummers--that would be cool. Crap man, it's really up to you...just make sure you go big.

no, it didn't :( Massive front end damage. Just barely driveable and the radiator was smashed, so it was towed to a body shop. Fortunately, I walk to work so I didn't even request a rental. UNfortunately, I had liability only on the vehicle (it's a 2003, it was paid off, I rarely drive it, it had dents it it from other people (emphasis on "other people") so this will all be coming out of pocket for the brilliant woman over here... guessing around $3,000-$3,500. It's been raining here, so I started fishtailing, whipped a circle or two and smashed head on into the guard rail. The guy who caused all of this just drove off. :(

LinkedIn GroupsGroup: L3C ConnectSubject: Announcement from L3C Connect -- Gates Foundation Moves Toward Program-Related Investments!Leading by example, the Bill & Meinda Gates Foundation has declared itself: the Foundation believes that investments are the right instruments to use in situations in which its program strategies are best served by partnering with revenue-generating enterprises, such as NGOs, financial institutions or companies. The Foundation recognizes that these entities may not be able to access investment capital from the private markets because the markets or entities that serve the poor may be perceived as too risky or costly to serve, or investors don’t have good information to assess the opportunities. By providing investment capital directly or by reducing risk to investors, the Foundation wants to help its partners access the capital they need to grow and demonstrate to the market that financially viable opportunities exist that serve the needs of poor or otherwise disadvantaged persons. The Foundation has established a pilot program with an envelope of $400 million to invest in a range of investment opportunities. This is an extraordinarily positive signal for all of us in the L3C community.
