Because of over enrollment, public schools average between 4.5 and 5 years to graduate -- thus the tuition (and living expenses) equal out. Very smart sister.

Private Universities often match Cal Grant funds _and_ offer their own additional scholarships. In other words a school like Standord, USC or Pacific that are twice as costly as UCSB may actually be cheaper to attend. Their endowments (contributions from Alumni. etc) step in and pick up fees for needy students. California is a fantastic place to get an affordable education. It's is the wealthy, that either give money of free will back to their schools AND are taxed for money by the state that pay for 'needy' kids college educations now.

And, there is a dual mission of teaching and research. Both are to some degree supported by taxes. Pretty costly enterprise, and very beneficial in many ways... The grant is awared on a sliding scale of need. The more you need the more you get. Right now, a student or family with the greatest need would have nealy ALL of their tuition covered by the grant. The recent grant ceiling was $9000. That will rise with the new tuition increses. The point is this: if you have need you can go to school for free or nearly free right now in California. It is the wealthy tax payor or the family that can afford current tuition that will pay more with the increase. The arguement to raise taxes to pay for college is a fallacy. The people paying taxes (the wealthy) are already subsidizing education in California _and_ paying for their own kids.

In 1974 when I accepted to UCSB I think it was $1400 for two semesters (one year). Aero, feel free to correct me if I am wrong. Either Fred paid quite a bit more in the 60s or nearly all of the relative increase at UC came between 1960 and 1974. It's still the best university education in the world dollar for dollar. As well, if you have the need and have the grades then the state of California pays your way! If you don't have the need then it's like taxes -- pay up! What's all the ruckus?
