Gun fight...Pelosi doesn't realize that this is the fight of a generation. 46 million AMERICANS (yes) do not have access to health care (absent bankruptcy) We've been notified that private insurers expect to increase fees by 18+ percent next year. They want everone to watch the chick fight while they clean out the safe. And Pelosi gets rolled. And Obama is AWOL.

I missed the analogy :-) Too funny. It doesn't seem to be a best move by her. She baffles me. I was just watching Maddow and her guest made the point that there is a growing faction of Democratic house membership (perhaps responding to it's increasingly moderate electorate that fled the Rep) that are more willing to consider Faith in decision making. I am wondering if Speaker Pelosi is busy demonstrating the axiom I shared yesterday: "if government wants something in a real bad way, they will usually get it bad".

I have to be out of town for a class in Dec so I know I'll miss a class for sure. I emailed the dude and am all, "I know I have to be out on this date, but I'm willing to do that week's work ahead of time or whatever you would need me to do to make it up." He's all, "See me after the first week's class. There may be something we can do that would be agreeable to all parties." He wants a BJ, doesn't he...

As someone who has become intimately familiar with our healthcare system over the past 7 years due to Nanette's involvement with every aspect of it during her career, and now her subsequent managing of approx. $500 million worth of business on the West Coast, KP has nailed the issue on the head. It IS the insurance companies who have caused this issue, and it will be the physicians who get shafted first, and then ultimately the general population. The problem is, nobody is educating the population that once you have destroyed the physician pool, that the quality of care will go out the door. Nobody is educating the public on the demise of the healthcare system in California (and other similar areas such as New York) over the past 5 or so years, noted by hospitals going out of business in high medicare/medicaid regions, the inability to recruit physicians to CA because of cost of living and high litigation, etc. With the government's inability to run any type of business on a successful basis (Medicare at current status pays only 18 cents per dollar billed by a physician nationally, and is why physcians can't afford to do business in govt. payor areas only - and it is scheduled to go bankrupt by 2016), this new bill is just a replacement for Medicare. There is a reason reform hasn't been figured out by smarter and more educated (not necessarily the same) from the industry - it's much more intricate than what a bunch of lifelong poly sci majors can possibly fathom.

Dan - perhaps this is all part of Mac's grand-master plan. Get them hooked on the small/cheaper ones...they (the consumer) will fall in love with it...we (Apple) will have it automatically deconstruct starting at the one month point....consumer comes in for repair...we say we'll do a free exchange, BUT...let them know that for just $200 they could have SUCH a better screen than what they were using.....

All issues have to be addressed in all three dimensions and not only in ones mind. It is here that the issue of "fit" emerges. The way in which these dimensions interplay depends on each other; while recognizing the drivers of change internally and externally.

If you are familiar with my past history you know that big insurers are at the very bottom of my 'like' list. But that's like saying Wall Street is at the bottom of most American's retirement wish list. The answer is reform, not extermination. Of course, I recognize there is a percentage of Americans (probably 25%) that do feel we need to re-work America in the European mold. I suggest that is short sighted. My point, I agree with you. Insurance companies are scotelickers. However, (IMO) over reaction is not the answer. Crime of passion is not a good defense.

Kevvie buddy, I agree with most of what you say. My problem is this--the health insurers currently are absolutely unscrupulous. Many of us are probably invested in them in some way through retirement accounts or other investments. I really don't know where my savings end up as far as corporate investments, but I'd be willing to sacrifice some small loss if they take a hit from a public system. I don't believe that health insures will go down, but they will have to evolve drastically. Profits will diminish. That's ok with me. Plus, I'm generally dumb about stuff. I'd trust a public system far more than corporate.

The Todd's greatest joy in life is sex. Although he hasn't slept with nearly the amount of women he brags about, he makes sex jokes and innuendos about sex or the ladies practically every time he speaks. He hits on all the ladies, over which Laverne and Carla get quite worked up. The Todd thinks that his womanizing problems come from his poor relationship with his mother. However, sometimes The Todd checks out the men around Sacred Heart. Once he admitted to being gay so that he can take advantage of Elliot and Carla, but it is later in that episode revealed that he is bi-sexual. The Todd appreciates "hot", regardless of gender. The Todd enjoys giving and receiving hi-fives, putting them in second place behind sex. He will give any type of hi-five to anyone for any reason. He is very adamant about being the only person who gives out hi-fives. (My Full Moon) He got his love for hi-fives while attending med school at the Bahamas from his old professor. (My Soul on Fire, Part 1) Some of his hi-fives can hurt the weak, or those not expecting them, for he visits the gym very often to train his arms. They can also bring a dead patient back to life. His right arm has a tattoo of "DOC" on it, which he shows off with his sleeveless scrubs. The Todd also has a large "banana hammock" collection, and is never without one. He has a rule that anyone who stays at his place must "hammock up". Todd also received a Four storey atomic wedgey from the Janitor in My Missed Perception after trying to get in a bath with him. This registered a 10 on Sacred Hearts pain chart.

They get paid to lead. They get paid to know stuff and take chances that may move society in a better direction. If Jefferson waited for everyone to support it before striking forth I'm guessing that I'd be living in a town called New London on the Snake River or sumptin. In my eyes, change happens at the margin and only incrementally so. If a Canadian or European model is flawed but more efficeint than what we have then it is not a phylospophical shift to go toward that but one of efficiency and need. The Dems have the numbers to make change now. The word public doesn't scare me as much as the word corporation. I guess that's just the core hippy kid coming out but when it also makes sound economic sense then any attempt to delay or kill it just strikes me as selfish nest keeping or outright ignorance and inflexibility. But, I could be way wrong, that I know.

E, I agree with you. I am willing to pay (a lot) to help my daughter and someone else's kids, family or parents get insurance and have a better chance at a full life. You said: "I know that we need incremental movement now, not tomorrow, not next year but right now so somewhere some dude and his family may actually get the scan or pill or tube up the butt that they desperatly need". Correct me if I am wrong: the current bill doesn't go in effect for three years. How can you live with that?

if you wait for a Congress that is able to set aside perochial interests and come up with something that is philosophically, morally and technically right not only will it be a snowy day in he!! but I can accuratly estimate that we'll all be dead before we see it, and I say before only because it still may not happen even if we never died but we sure as heck are gonna die. There are people dying in the streets as we speak sure as nuts and though I am comfortable in my warm house and have work paid health insurance I know that we need incremental movement now, not tomorrow, not next year but right now so somewhere some dude and his family may actually get the scan or pill or tube up the butt that they desperatly need. Will it cost? yes. Will it cost a lot? yes. But is it a better cost than buying some more billion dollar bomb throwing airplanes to go control some far off dirt in the name of oil. Damned straight, in my eyes. When you write legislation there are clear winners and losers. Good legislation involves clear winners and clear losers. When they try and win-win and come away with little no losers than it becomes bad legislation but it does not invalidate the underlying need I'm thinking

Any government run option can undercut private insurance who depend on profit to survive. Government will not be motivated by profit, if fact we know they will create additional debt. So over time private insurance will become a thing of the past. It may take ten to twenty years or more but will likely happen. Once set in motion entitlements are very hard to undo if not impossible. Again, this may not a bad thing but the majority of the people are not behind it. There in an element in power and among the people that believe a fundamental shift to a more European way of life is the right thing for us. We will see how powerful that group is in the coming years. They should be taking more time. My prediction: passing a similar bill in the Senate will not be as easy as it was in Congress. Any bill coming out of the Senate will likely have additional negotiation between parties or moderate Dems and will be watered down. We'll see.

My point about the bill from Congress is that it is rather disingenuous. Burried deep in 2000 pages is a path to a single payer health care system run by the state. That in itself may not be a bad thing but it is something the majority of Americans would vote down. They see it as building a dependency on the state. That is something that would fundamentally change American way of life. Most Americans are not interested in that type of fundamental change.

I totally agree Kevin but am afraid that they better get something done now, this year, or it will be 20 years or never before an opportunity like this comes again. If we wait for perfect we will all be dead and it still will not have arived. Political triage, incrementally get it further towards perfect but dont wait until it's "good" cause it never will be. As it is that you cant negotiate with terrorist you can also not negotiate good health care with people who's only interest is killing it.
