Wooden boats are great. I raced for awhile on the last great wooden 12 meter, Intrepid, a former America's Cup boat. She was beautiful, but dangerous... There's nothing like a gorgeous wooden hull cutting through the waves.

My son in law had a sail boat about that size. I think it was designed for racing but he would just sail the bay. As a teenager, he was a crew member for a summer on the DuPont family yacht running between Delaware and the Florida Keys. That was a BIG sail boat.

flo. I know! I'm still holding out hope that I'll be hired by this microfinance organization in Geneva, but it's KILLING me just to sit here and wait and wait and wait for a solid commitment from them. I soooooo want to work on global poverty issues that the more I sat/sit here and waited the more convinced I get that it's not going to happen for me. So....in order to like, I dunno, function on a daily basis, I needed a back-up plan in case this doesn't work out. I didn't even realize until I saw it yesterday that the Peace Corp needs financial/business expertise in community development related issues!!! SCORE!!! So, whatever I end up doing, I think I'll be more than happy either way :)

So this morning I almost "dick cheney'd" a guy that I shot last year. He walked right in front of a straight downhill shot that was totally set up by becky. This time it would have been 40 feet instead of 120 yards, probably would have made a bigger mess with ficocci #5's. When the shooting starts... don't move. Good point off the vizsla on some huns.

No amount of income is worth knowingly or unknowingly putting a person at great risk. We'd hope this to be inherently obvious. History tells us differently. So we need legal counsel to pursue them. It's always good to have insurance to protect your business no matter what type it is. I have a ton of it myself. You never know what is going to happen. I have worked both sides of the insurance fence. Even though you may think that the person making a claim is wacko, it can be extremely expensive to defend yourself. And if the call goes against you, you can potentially loose it all.

Relative to reform, I would add that I have a brother who practices PI and medical malpractice. I have worked with both sides attorneys in court. I was also a qualified medical examiner and have been used as an agreed upon medical examiner, approved by the state of california and approved by both defense and plantiff legal counsel to help decide medical legal testimony in court. My point, I have a record of being able to remain impartial.

Liability insurance is required for USAT coaches. Some years back I took the USAT coaching level I certification; there were about 50 people getting certified. MOST of them claimed to have been coaching for a number of years. The question was asked "what is the first information you need when you start coaching an athlete?" I couldn't believe what people said. Goals, 'A' race for season, # of years racing, threshold levels for each sport, VO2max, weakest event, etc. I finally raised my hand and said "medical history" - yeah.

KP, its weird to even ask but you have to carry that kind of insurance? if an athlete dies will they sue their coach? I think that risk is assumed by the athlete at the point he/she signs up for a program

Some of these folks may have had problems while eating chicken wings and drinking beer. It's one of the problems I have with certain types of medical malpractice suits and why reform in that area might well go hand in hand with current health care reform.

I agree with KP; the more these events allow participation, the greater the likelihood of this type of thing happening. How many people are these events registering? Didn't Chicago have something like 40,000? I mean, if you do the math, it's basically the same risk of having a heart attack during any exercise-related event. I'm not saying these people had a heart attack, just using that as an example.

Maybe some heart attack, maybe some cardiac sudden death. Heart attack or infarction is a blockage in coronary arteries. Sudden cardiac arrest or death occurs when the electrical system to the heart malfunctions and suddenly becomes very irregular. The heart flutters or quivers and the brain gets no O2. Either way, these things happen more and more when an aging population that has underlying issues gets relatively serious about sport. Elbert L. "Ickey" Woods
