When I was in Madison I went with tina to a coffee house where we met up with Dan, Mike Mooney and Birch. That was a great trip. I also met ChiChaz, Ray and quite a few others. I was blown away by the beauty on the river. Folks on the coasts (me) need to spend a little more time in the fly over zone!

I was blown away by how cool the riding was outside of Madison. I was there at a good time of year and we had decent weather, but the rolling, green hills sprinkled with barns reminded me of puzzles I have worked on. It was spectacular. Quite different from the desert I live in.

from MAdiosn newspaper - "But Madison officials said Friday they are already working to bring other big biking events to the area, with Madison Mayor Dave Cieslewicz promising news soon about a "very exciting bicycling event." The mayor's office declined to provide additional detail. "Those routes are still there," Cieslewicz said, speaking of the 170.9-mile Olympic road cycling course, which would have started in downtown Madison, headed west out of town and ended in Blue Mound State Park. "We're going to find a way to use that route." hmmm . . . UCI Worlds Road Champs in Montreal 1974, Colorado Springs 1986, Hamilton ONT, 2003 . . . .

We've shot several shows on Copacabana Beach with up to 1 million people. I agree, Fred. It would have been special for the Olympics to come back to America and doubly special for the locals of Chicago if it had worked out. Also agree with you that neither side in Politics is entirely correct. Objectively, both sides must accept that their most fringe members are hurting our country. Recently, one side is more visibly intolerant because one party holds power most of the power. But that is a very poor excuse. Sad to watch when there is so much to be done.

I feel sorry for Chicago. I think the Big Windy would have been a great venue for the games. I know it's always fun to poke fun at Oprah but I think her heart is the right place. The Obamas did their best but I am sure we will hear a different opinion from hate radio and Faux News. Following up on the KP-IO exchange below, it is a shame how difficult it has become to fight for one's position while at the same time maintianing respect for the other side's point of view. Our country faces some very serious challenges. No one party or president has the "right" answer. But when the other side will not countenance rational discussion, it makes it all the harder to find the best solutions to problems.

I know it's got to be disappointing for locals (and much of the entire country) not seeing the Olympics in Chicago as they had hoped. I remember living in Los Angeles when the city prepared for the '84 games and then attending days of the track and field events. The #1 all time sporting events I have watched in person. Chicago is a great city and still has big shoulders, Chazzy! I am sure Bart Conner (and his wife Nadia), Jackie Joyner-Kersee and others all worked very hard on the bid.

I'm personally disappointed that Chicago didn't get the games. I lived in Chicago for over a quarter century and I think it would have done the games proud. Chicago is far from being a broken down Ford. It's a world-class city, but I guess that you have to live here to get that. That said, it's also somewhat of a relief that we don't have to deal with all the headaches that come from hosting the Olympics. And if you all thought that Chicago stood for graft, let's see what happens in Rio..

Laura, here's my take on the Olympic bid failure. The last thing Europeans and other nations want is US gold medal athletes going on about how much better it would be to win gold in their country surrounded by their countrymen. Also, I think the message Obama sent was "I'm going to work you into my schedule, you'll have to give us the bid." Neither one of those things helped our cause.

The Obama - Oprah trip to the IOC didn't look right. On a number of different levels. It didn't look right internationally. It made some go hmmmmm (Chicago politics). That's not helpful in these times. And then Michelle telling the IOC about all the 'sacrifices' she made to be there. Barf. Naive may be the term to best describe the Obama's belief that their 'power' carries any weight with the IOC. The IOC runs on money. SHOW ME THE MONEY!!!!

Folks here are astounded at being put out so quickly. Oh well, at least my taxes won't be skyrocketing like they would have if we would have had to support this thing. As per custom in Chicago, the building permits were lined up for miles anticipating this thing and Mayor Daley was queued up to be the patronage king of all time. The trades are not going to be happy about this. It's Michael Jordan's fault for not going to Denmark.

American Girl is a sub of Mattel, a publicly traded company. My question is whether Pleasant Rowland, the founder and former owner would have used this storyline. The dolls were started to compliment a series of books about girls at various times in US history. But the dolls became the biggest part of the business.

KP I don't think we disagree much at all. Right now its clear the system is not working at providing the serious courageous leadership we need. Gerrymandering, fear mongering, the sheer amount of money required to maintain office (and the people who contribute expecting some personal value from the contribution). The nation's economy, Financial services, health care financing, media, public policy are all becoming clearly run by a small but effective minority of self-serving, privileged, disengenuous, immoral jerks. And the game is so becoming so fixed that it gets harder to see how honest(fairly obvious to most people) solutions can be even debated fairly, let alone acted upon.

The problem with polictics is the politics.

Date: Thursday October 1st, 2009 14:19 Comment 194524
KP of SD email: @
We strongly disagree. As you know, gerrymandering is less an issue about the President. It is about congress and assemblys at the state and local levels. The people we send to Washington have screws loose on both sides as they are so often elected by perpetual power and special interest. The fact that 'majority' of voters (no matter what they call themselves) cannot regularly find a candidates to accurately represent the majority opinion is a fact - and it is due to gerrymandering. The result is a group of politicians unable to work together in the house of representatives. It's not a left or right issue. It's dirty politics on both sides to secure and hold power. It's distorting our system of government's ability to compromise and serve the people. If we had local and state politicians who actually represented and agreed with the majority views of communities instead of special interest and fringe left/right groups the middle class would be rewarded with greater cooperatioon in state capitols and on the hill.

My favorite rant in a movie from An American President "This is a country made up of people with hard jobs that they're terrified of losing. The roots of freedom are of little or no interest to them at the moment. We are a nation afraid to go out at night. We're a society that has assigned low priority to education and has looked the other way while our public schools have been decimated. We have serious problems to solve, and we need serious men to solve them. And whatever your particular problem is, friend, I promise you, Bob Rumson is not the least bit interested in solving it. He is interested in two things and two things only: Making you afraid of it and telling you who's to blame for it. That, ladies and gentlemen, is how you win elections. You gather a group of middle-aged, middle-class, middle- income voters who remember with longing an easier time, and you talk to them about family and American values and personal character. Then you have an old photo of the President's girlfriend. You scream about patriotism and you tell them she's to blame for their lot in life, you go on television and you call her a whore."
