Actually, IF I am officially offered this position (which I have not been yet and I don't want to jinx myself) I'm offering her the ability to have a physical US office (which she did want in the near future anyway) as of October 1st. It's a gorgeous two level loft here in our building...spiral staircase, super high ceilings exposed brick, etc, and the main floor is perfect for cocktail parties to woo potential funders. AND SHE WOULD GET ME, TOO!!! :-)

The thing about Kona is that it's not for everyone. Some of us just get bitten by this THING. It's not normal. It's like what Roy Neary (Richard Dreyfuss) experiences in Close Encounters when he becomes obsessed with the Devils Tower National Monument in Wyoming. We know we were "different". Point of information: Tina could have gone to Kona as an AGer or as a PRO. That is very very very rarified air. Tina is mentally and physically a beast! No one will reach their physical potential unless they do what she did. Count yourself out unless you are willing to drop everyting else. If not you may reach relative potential (ie within personal constraints). I hope you (Tina) come over to the big island one year to be reminded what single minded focus can do (in any field // business, parenting, sport, etc). Please, ride a bike a modicum of volume before you travel over so we can hang out :-)

E - re the Kona thread: I qualified at IMC in 1998 (4th place in age group), did Kona 5 weeks later. Just missed in 1999, then got lucky in the lottery in 2001, but bike crashed on the course after Havii and DNF'd. In 1998, I was in the best shape of my life: Mike McCormack was my coach, I trained about 16-18 hours a week and worked full time and did alot of my training on the Computrainer at 4:00 a.m. with a young daughter at home, so not to interfere with her needs. I worked my training around my job and my parental responsibilities. It was NOT easy. But, 1998 was the best athletic year of my life and I have ZERO regrets going for it. But, by 2001, I was burned out, had done way too much since 1998. In hindsight, was not mentally or physically up to the challenge. By my 11 ironman in 2003 ( 10 ironman finishes, only the one DNF), I was ready for a looong break. But, I still get jazzed by Kona. :-)

KP has got to be an amazing coach to have all those athletes going to the Big Dance. About 50,000 people do an IM each year, but only 1,800 make it to Kona. I'd like to go again, but I don't have that drive KP spoke of. I really like training and competing, but if it ever stops being fun, I'll hang it up.

2,500mg of salt a day is the recommended max. Only 500mg maintains the normal salt balance. Average American equals 5,000mg a day. i might be in that range or higher. So, in closing, I offer that my daily salt intake is probably excessive and damaging.

Then ta break through ya need "salt" on the risoto. I'm betting that the salt can be different things to different athletes- anger, mean streak, compulsion, fear of failure, masochism or even economic. At the margin, what makes athletes wanna go that extra step. Maybe I'm approaching it wrong: maybe the salt comes first and that is what makes you put in the time, training, sacrifice, etc.

I still compete a little. But I'm at the point where the engine is maxxed out and only the small tweaks in technique improve the overall results which are far below the qualifying for Kona level. For me, it will take luck to get there.

I totally agree with KP. Transgression to Kona takes years (as a non gifted athlete myself). I see that with the work I put toward it and consistently fall short. Each year absolutely has to have progress towards the next. Staying at the same level is obtainable by your average Joe athlete but to improve takes focus and time. More focus leads to more time which leads to improvements. I see it as a step ladder. You get to the first step which leads you to the next step which ultimately puts you on top. Its also takes on a cone shape. The more focus the smaller the cone and the closer you get to the opening at the top. 8)

E, I have guided about 30 athletes to Kona slots and about 10 AG championships at international IMs. The descriptions below holds true. The athlete is always super focused and executes well under pressure (think military, EMT, Firefighters). If they are not gentically superior they are exponentially more focused and patient.

In all my years coaching I have only worked with 2-3 athletes who could lay down 22-25hr weeks, hold demanding professional careers (40-50hr work weeks) have successful relationships and stay healthy. Even they had to take breaks after years of focus. So, the guys and gals who qualify alter their lives. If you have so-so genes you would need to alter your life structure even more! Of the six athletes who qualified only two of them hold down full time jobs. For the others, training is a full time job. One group trains 25-28hrs a week the other 17-10hrs a week.

5-7 years just to qualify. For me, in my early to mid 40s I shut down my chiropractic office to train full time. From 2001 to 2005 I trained 25hrs a week all yera long. I went to bed at 8:00am and got up at 3:00am seven days a week for that enture time. I never had a drink of alcohol and ate like a champion; I didn’t not go out to restaurants or to the movies or watch TV. I had a sponsor and close friend in gordo; the kind few athletes will ever benefit from like I did. Weekly volume was about 20,000+ yards swimming // about 300 miles riding // 35-40 miles running. So, 6 to 7hrs swimming // 15 hours riding // 5.5 to 6.5 hours running. It took me five years to qualify.

Hey E, I wrote quite a bit about this on a thread on my forum recently. Currently I am coaching six athletes who qualified for Hawaii this year and will be racing in Kona on October 10th. They are all different but they all restructured their lives to accomplish the goal. All things being equal (and they seldom are) the most genetically gifted athletes are age group champions and can race PRO within two years of entering the sport. For the rest of us it takes 5-7 of complete focus to reach personal potential.

E - KP is the man to go to for how to get to Kona. He's been there like three times but has qualified several more times but did not go. I've only been once. In 2006 I have no idea how I did it. I was just out there having fun. I had hoped and trained for the last five years to get to Kona but failed everytime. This year it was time just to have fun. When I was just 300 yards from the finish line, Nancy yelled out that I was second in my AG. And there were two slots that year. And I was over an hour slower than my best time at IMC. Go figure.

ya know, like after all the hours and sufficient training it would be the inner mean streak that made the difference between qualie and also ran. Like the mean streak made ya jus bad ass enough to cross the threshold. Cause I'm convinced that ya havta be very bad assed to qualie...that hours and miles alone don't gaurantee it. The bad ass quotient is what causes the tipping point, the training and equipment just provide the vehicle

so on today's mtn bike ride at sunset I'm all thinking aboot Ironman and Kona and stuff and it occurs to me that many athletes try to qualify for that race and reach a high standard. Something makes the difference. Many have the drive, determination, background, genes, training hours, equipment, etc. But I'm wondering if there is one thing that is added to the mix that allows the threshold to be crossed. So then it occurred to me, why not ask Kev! so, all things being equal (if that was possible) if the training is done, the equipment is right, the health on that day was good, and the talent level is there- is there one thing you would say makes the difference at the threshold between just missing and qualifying? kinda like a nice risoto with a pinch of salt on top. What would be the salt gnomesain?
