So I'm racing Chicago tomorrow. My granddaughter Brooklyn called to wish me luck. Then she added, "At least try and win, 'Buelo." I explained to her that it's more about racing hard and trying your best. She said, "Okay, but try and win anyway, okay?"

ray of @ email: @
Okay, I went on the site. They are the same friggin' pole with a smaller basket and an angled rubber tip. And for the record, I still think swoosh looks down on pole hikers. ;-)

Swoosh, the studies are interesting and worth a read, IMHO. PT Advance just did an article: www.advanceweb.com/pt or www.inwa-nordicwalking.com for a couple. Some therapists are now incorporating the concept into treatment plans.

I just don't want the added weight of hiking poles, that's all. But seriously, in the sierra, hiking poles with "bear bells" on them qualify as dorky. ;-)

Date: Saturday August 29th, 2009 13:09 Comment 192383
Laura of @ email: @
Ray, nice to know that you walk with them also. Mine are not hiking poles - they are Leki Nordic poles that help you to mimic the xc motion. Dryland training. Nordic poles don't have a hiking basket, they have a tip so that you can drag them behind, like skiing. And if they are good enough for the Scandinavians who invented xc, good enough for me! ;-) I just used mine outside on a few miles. :-)

Weather is ridiculous here. Downright October-like. So fall-like, that in the next couple minutes am getting the Nordic poles out for a Nordic walking session. There is a good article in PT Advance (maybe Swoosh has seen it?) on how many more muscles Nordic Walking recruits over just walking - it basically is the same as skinny skiing. Figure that the peeps who already xc know that. And, it's safer than roller skis!

IMC REPORT: Ms. Patty Party and I are in Penticton where it is less than 24 hours before the gun goes off for IMC 2009. Weather forecasts are calling for warm conditions, but it should be a great day for racing. The water temperature is very comfortable, and we'll go with a sleeveless wetsuit for the swim. Took a couple of swims at the Sicamous this week, and there was a camera crew from TSN yesterday that snagged Patty for an interview ("Tell me, how to you plan to get to the finish?" sort of stuff). Haven't seen Fred yet, but we've been pretty low-profile and low-key this week. I expect I'll see him somewhere on the Cawston out-and-back. I will be wearing bib #1938 and Patty will be racing #2789. I'll post a quick report Sunday night.

However, I'm kinda busy for the next two years so that will have to wait. Instead I will live vicariously through you! AERO - do you have smoke up there? It is BAD here in LaLaLand today. It's super smoky in Beverly Hills and it's even approaching my neighborhood! ICK! Tomorrow's ride will be on the coast to avoid the crappy air as much as possible.

Check this out from Dr. Boles in the Mark Allen Online newsletter....(sorry for the long post but I couldn't figure out how to post a link). ;-) My Kona Lucky Number 10! by Sharon Boles AsicsAlmost 10 years! That is how long I have been in the Ironman Lottery. Mind you, this is the first thing that I have ever won. When I go to Vegas, I can walk by a table and it will start losing. I never thought I had a chance of winning a spot to Kona. The Ironman lottery application asks why you want to race Kona and I truly believe that it is the ultimate race for an Ironman. I have always believed that if racing Hawaii was ever meant to be, the lottery would come through as there is no way that I could ever qualify for Kona. I have completed seven Ironman races but have always finished hours after the winners. My goal has always been to be off the bike before someone wins the race and to finish without needing a glow stick. People ask me what my best sport is and the truth is I don't have one. I am a mediocre swimmer (and mediocre may be generous), a mediocre biker and a mediocre runner. Although I might lack speed, I am stubborn. I don't like to quit. During a horrendous Ironman lately, I kept thinking that my father says I never quit . I knew that finishing that race would punch my ticket to Kona. I will always remember being called by a friend on Easter Sunday who had seen my name on NBC as a lottery winner. Even though I kept receiving emails and calls from others who had seen it as well, I didn't believe it until I received the official email from Ironman. I have been conflicted about receiving a lottery spot. Part of me feels like I am a poser compared to the "real" athletes. I have been reminded that once you finish, you are an Ironman regardless of how you got to Kona. That is my goal for October 10, just finish and to soak up as much of the day as possible. Ironman has taught me a lot about patience, perseverance, the limits of my body and more importantly my mind. The friendships I have made through training and racing will be lifelong. Who else can you drag along for 100 mile training rides? I am grateful for the friends who train with me, my family who tolerates all my "crazy" exploits and the coaches who respond to all my questions and concerns. While I have used the MarkAllenOnline training program for the past five Ironmans, I realized that I needed to step up my training for Kona. Luis Vargas has been wonderful in providing extended coaching for the past few months. I can't wait to return from Kona and bore everyone with my stories about every minute of the race. See you in Kona! Sharon Boles
