Vamples man, here's what you do--get in the water, swim NW, stop at Suva for a slurpee and a burger, head over to Hawaii get some more food, then swim over to Goleta. I'll keep the porchlight on and the beer cold in case you're having a slow day.

Sort of ANZAC, vimp. My dad was born on the Isle of Jersey and moved to NS when he was a wee lad (by way of South Africa). His brothers were born there. But my dad probably ate a lot of NZ sheep. That probably did something to him and I am sure he passed that on to me. Maybe that's where I get my good looks from ;-)

I'm going to head out for a run after work tonight. Weeeell, ~run~ is prolly a misnomer. A very sloooow jog. I saw a picture of me in my board shorts from vacation a couple of weeks ago. Yikes. I'd give Buddha and his moobs a jiggle for his money.

Finished a very tough 180 km soaring race in the Scottish lowlands earlier this afternoon (live on the internet, doncha know). So far, only 10 (out of 23 who have started) have managed to finish without crashing or having to land before reaching the finish line. I'm currently sitting 5th which is a very good result for me, considering the competition. There are a couple of very talented pilots ahead of me. There are 4 races in this series. Best 3 of 4 races count. Round 2 goes tomorrow night. Yeehaaaaw!

Tina, somewhat what Ray said re the patient tech role. You DO all the gross stuff, but you are also the eyes and ears for the nurse, because you are often in the room more and a good tech can alert his/her nurse if there is a sudden change in status in a patient. Sure, some nurses will boss and be total bit!!s, but they are also the ones who boss the student nurses around and junior colleagues -- other nurses will work with you to teach you. It's like any job, gotta enjoy your piece of humble pie, but you do make a difference.

tina, patient care techs don't really need to know squat about science and they get all that hands on touchy feely stuff. Of course, the nurses boss them around and the techs actually get to wipe bottoms and empty bedpans and do all that gross stuff.

I did not play second very often. Catcher and left field mostly. In Thailand my team played the national women's softball team from the Phillipines. They kicked our butts from end of the National Stadium to the other. It was an embarassment. I did not coach any baseball after that. I have stuck to running since then.

Tina, new and cool. I was invited to do a two week medical rotation at the Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista. I teamed up with an MD from Boulder and athletic trainers from the national ski team in Utah and the national wrestling team in Denver. The treatment I offer consists of chiropractic care, Active Release Technique, soft tissue manipulation and a wide array of physical therapy modalities (heat, ice, GameDay, electric stim, iontophoresis, cold laser, compression, etc.) The Medical Performance Center is well stocked with ways to get athletes well as fast as possible. I treated track and field athletes up until they left for Berlin for the world championships, BMX bikers who are leaving for worlds in South Africa tomorrow and kayakers who left for worlds in Halifax last Sunday. As well the developmental womens beach volleyball camp and male national paralympic soccer team. I was invited back to work the BMX world cup meet in September as well. I finish up on Tuesday. A very nice experience!

Swoosh, who knew that stuff was expensive:The rising cost of oil and the dwindling number of local poultry ranches have area farmers and gardeners scratching for a source of good, old-fashioned fertilizer: chicken manure. When Bruce and Robin Breslaw of Creswell began raising birds in 1980, they were among nearly 20 Lane County chicken ranchers. Now, their Chicken Ranch is one of just three remaining ranches in the county. Back then, they could barely give away their ranch's pungent byproduct. Today, they struggle to keep up with demand, despite charging $7.50 a cubic ...

One of my nursing profs has those of us in her clinical group, at the end of each shift, each say to the group what we were grateful for that particular day. At first, we were all uncomfortable with that, but gradually, we learned that by expressing our gratitude for whatever, that it was a teaching moment for all of us. Nursing is really life-changing. At least for me.

Laura, you are an example of people who do the right thing when they are faced with life's toughest challenges. Doing the next indicated step is not being a hero, but it is meeting and overcoming the most difficult of circumstances. That's what we do. Nobody is exempt. Often, when it is our turn we see that we are not unique. Rare is the person that can see things through that prism without first hand experience. Prayers to you and your family.
