Believe it or not, Bruce, there is surfing on Lake Michigan, and my girls go to "surf camp" during the weeks we spend in Michigan. I have a long board at my house on the other side of the Lake. Now, those aren't the kind of waves I see at the bluffs in Solana or near Swami's, but I don't stay upright too well on those. Wish I all could be California dude.

I don't feel like I have to try and 'control' what I say, how I say it, how fast I say it, how quickly I move on to the next topic, etc. They're mostly "thinker" type people...they LOVE this stuff! :)

I meant to say the world rankings are based on total mileage flown. The mileage flown is a based on the actual distance of each race multiplied by the real world sailplane performance handicap. The higher the performance, the further you need to fly to reach one baseline mile. The time required is a function of how far you fly and how fast. Races range from about 100km (very short) to around 350 km (fairly long). Most are around 200 km. Race time, including launching, climbing to the start gate, and waiting for the start gate to open, is usually 1.5 to 2 hours. So you can appreciate, to ~race~ 231,000 km takes a loooong time.

The world rankings aren't based on any skill - just time racing online. I've flown 36,750 km in about 13.5 days of accumulated racing time. The #1 ranked guy has flown 231,000 km in a little over 57 days. 57 days!!! That's about 6 hours a day so far? And I thought I was addicted...

A roadie gets up early, as he has for so many Saturday morning rides, and softly slips out of the bedroom so as not to wake his wife. He dresses quietly in the next room, grabs his helmet and water bottles, and goes out to pump the tires. As the garage door opens he's confronted by a windswept rain. He's ridden before in these conditions. He doesn't like it, but when it's Saturday morning he never misses. He ponders the dismal conditions and then retreats to the kitchen to tune a small TV to The Weather Channel. The forecast only sounds worse. Tornado watch. This is one Saturday when he just can't make it happen. As thunder booms in the distance, he slips off his shoes, quietly returns to the bedroom, undresses and slips back into bed. There he cuddles up to his wife's back and whispers, "The weather out there is terrible." To which she sleepily replies, "Yeah, can you believe my husband went riding in that crap?"
