My estimation of E has gone up considerably since he said he's from the Santa Cruz area!! In fact, E ROCKS!! I spent two years at high school just outside Watsonville, the summers up at Bonny Doon near a turkey farm, some serious beach time at La Selva, Pajaro, Capitola, and of course at Santa Cruz. There is something about the air down there. It is unlike any where else I've ever been (except maybe Point Reyes). Being on the Pacific Ocean makes it all possible. Tina would probably never make it over the hill to her new job if she moved there. She will probably end up as a barista at one of those places on Pacific or out by the campus.

Laura, nurses get nurses butt because they eat about 20x their weight during an 8 hour shift. It far in a way exceeds the calories burned walking. Just go to any nursing station and look for the goodies. Grateful patients give them chocolate, cookies, heck one GI doc has been known to treat them to a pizza lunch every month or so.

But, before I go, I do have a question for the medical types: Are there any studies out there that have figured out the amount of miles the average nurse or doc walks during a shift? Laura - Don't hold your breath on California. Frankly, our government is broken. The Republicans have bested the Democrats in the budget struggle. Our education and health care systems are slowly collapsing. The $24 billion in cuts have gutted what was when I was younger a fairly progressive state. This collapse has been 30 years in the making since the passage of Prop 13. With all the other propositions passed in the interim, our state legislature is virtually powerless to do what needs to be done. These recent cuts just kick the can down the road. The lack of fiscal sanity is still there. It will only get worse next year. The only question really is how long it will be before the people of California say "enough" and support the reorganization we need. Given the reality of Cali politics, I am not holding my breath. Come and visit anyway. It still is a beautiful place. I would not move here to live.

I hope you are right, ray. I do like Lance and was really impressed with the way he rode the tour, especially his tactical decisions. I learned a lot about racing watching him. However, I like Contador's fire in the belly. Lance is very calculating and seems like the big corporate behemoth moving in on a mom and pop operation. I hope AC gets a team that can work for him, but I think if Lance pulls out all the stops next year, he is going to be hard to beat. It will David vs. Goliath in '10!!

This rivalry pretty is parallel to the Lemond-Hinault feud. Bottom line is twenty something year old legs will beat nearly forty year old legs everything else being equal. Read The Yellow Jersey...the old guy never wins. ;-)

ray of @ email: @
Fred, that's a big if. Lance is older and can't expect to ride like the old days. What he will see a continued decline in his abilities. Contador is impetuous and will regret not keeping that dialog to himself, but he is clearly a much better rider than Lance at this point and maybe at any point. But everyone knows that money is a much bigger factor in winning the tour than talent. Hire the right guys and you can buy yourself a yellow jersey. Then you dump them when they want more...Hamilton, Landis et al come to mind.

I got mixed feelings about Alberto. He is undoubtedly the best tour rider in the world today. He is far ahead of LA when Lance was his age in terms of grand tour wins. He also acts a lot like LA at that age. One big difference: AC won't have Johann calling the shots anymore. Nor will he have the money or influence to buy a team dedicated only to him. I think he go for one of the big Euro squads like Liquigas or Caisse d'Epargne if they can buy some mountain guys like LA is going to. But if LA can ride next year like he did this year, I don't think it will matter what AC does. He will not win.

and now, I am going to partake of a Central Waters Brewing Co. Glacial Trail IPA..that's from Amherst, Wisco for those into IPAs..along with some Gino's East 'Za with Mom and Miss Hilary (Phil is up at a tennis tournament)..so it's girl's night here. Life at this moment does not suck. :-)

I did no semblance of trail running today. Closest I got to running was taking care of 8 patients for an 8 hour shift. And, the closest I got to skinny dipping was watching the rear view of a 77 year old pt flapping in the breeze...

Zatarans, eh? An ok product. But, I've found making red beans and rice the old school way from scratch is alot less gassy, because you rinse the beans before cooking..
