IO, I think feet are like many other parts of the body. Some folks are in for problems no matter what they do. Think Bill Walton. It's the same with heart failure, diabetes, cancer, degenerative joint disease. Are there things we can all do to be heathier and mitigate risk? Yes. Does doing those things mean you won't die at a young age? No. If you do everything wrong are you assured of dieing in middle age? No. I went barefoot (walking and running) most of my life until I was in college or in a classroom. It didn't make my feet stronger. They wore out. There isn't always an expalanation that is satifying.

I agree with FFO, this is going a little too far, and this dude would likely interpret any acceptance as a foot in the door. Such as from Dumb and Dumber. "So what are the chances you and I could get together?" "Not good." "Say one in a million?' "Yeh" "So you're saying I have a chance!"

Ray...55...I think you're following the same line of reasoning I may be going down. It may be too late for me, especially with the Morton's Neuroma. But I am feeling a little desperate since I get generally contradictory information depending upon which Ortho/podistrists I see. Even those that are runners. And I am increasingly convinced it was the over engineered shoes (Asics Kinsei) that started most of the problems in the first place.

rita - This is harassment pure and simple. If she made it clear to this meathead that she does not want his attention and he continues to pursue her, he is asking for a clobbering of some sort. Metaphorically speaking, of course. She needs to tell him in no uncertain terms that his advances are unwelcome (even if he is offering CCCs as good as Boop's!). He does not sound dangerous at this stage, but your friend should end this as soon as possible.

I've got a friend who's got a problem. Maybe you all can help. See, she's in a relationship, and happily so, but has an 'admirer.' Whilst she has explained to said admirer that she is in a relationship and NOT AVAILABLE, said admirer continues to bring her granola bars, candy, etc. to her spin class, has left her chocolate candies under her windshield wiper, which she has all gladly consumed in the past. However, said admirer just came into her work place with CCCs, fresh from the oven. Since she was very busy at the time, the delivery was left on her desk. She very much wants to eat the CCCs, but, is perhaps thinking that if she does she might be giving her admirer the wrong impression. It's possible he thinks she is just too skinny. Who knows. WHAT WOULD YOU DO?!

Sharon, my cat is 7lb and gets 1 unit in the morning and 1/2 unit in the afternoon. When she was on the 1 unit twice daily she went into insulin shock and we had to hand feed her to get her blood sugar up. Cats are extremely sensitive to insulin. Also they run higher sugars than humans normally do.

IO, all kidding aside, here's my take on barefoot running. I think you're about my age, if not, I apologize. 50+ year old feet are stiffer, less compliant and less able to tolerate the stress that barefoot running will place on them. Your ligaments are tighter, less elastic. You may get some mild stretch out of them by going slow but more likely, you are going to injure them psin, strain or rupture.

IO - I think wo/man (how's that for PC!) was made to run barefoot. On dirt and grass, not what we have these days. When I ran the Big Sur Marathon some years ago, there was a guy with long hair, shorts only, and barefoot. He was also carrying a paper bag, which was much too small to be carrying shoes. The TV guys jumped on him right away. I thought he was a goof ball until I saw him at the finish line still barefoot and with his little bag.

Mostly it's a state of mind I think. If you keep using it, it will still keep working. If you can stay healthy, age is pretty much secondary to what you can do.

Jon - There was a LOT of complaining yesterday about race organization. I think Brad's website gives a way overblown picture of how well the race is organized. Just a few examples: Nancy ran into a couple who came all the way from BC to run the race, but had to drive around for two hours trying to locate the registration site; the is no information posted on the website about having to ride your bike before the start from T2 to T1; the run includes some VERY dangerous, rocky foot trails, some of them very steep. He also runs four races at the same time. I know he means well but it certainly takes the edge off doing this race.

Vimp, your comments about Fred reminded me of the time at IMC when I was doing my normal 12-hour shift of security, and I was stationed at the gate to the Recovery Area. The volunteers were supposed to be relieved occasionally, or at least to be brought food and water. Because of an oversight, I was at my post for hours without any replacement or food or water. I was fading fast and would not leave my assigned post. I decided to ask the very next athlete nearby to get me some food and water from the athletes' table. There was a bright light in my eyes, and I saw the shape of a man approaching me. I saw that he was walking okay, so as he got closer, I stopped him and said, "Sir, would you mind getting me...." At this very moment, my eyes had risen to his face, and, surprise, IT WAS BY BRO FFO!! Out of thousands of athletes, I had randomly selected my own brother! The food allowed me stay on post for several more hours. Fred is my hero in many ways!! Yesterday, I was there when he came in first in his AG! Yay, Fred!

Hey Fred - congrats. I was a referee at Auburn about 4 years ago. I really like Brad Kearns a lot, great guy. But we finished with the most scathing report I've ever been a part of as a referee. Lots of little things, few big ones (like no fencing off of the transition area.) No way to verify if athletes had done the whole course etc. It was a duathlon that year due to logs in the lake and unbelievable conditions. I ran the run course the next day (part of western states 100 route) Pure Torture. Big props to CLM that year as she finished a very tough day.

I ran the Auburn Half yesterday. I finished first in my AG, but I am not sure just how many were in it. (Don't ask; this is a so-so race in terms of organization.) I know I was the oldest runner in the race. At least 20 runners had encouraging words as they passed me. It finally dawned on me that they did not expect to see someone so old so far into the race! It was sort of funny after awhile. It was not like I was struggling or any thing. But I am not doing this race again. It is super tough (over 5,500' on the bike and 850' on the run) but the lack of organization takes the edge off. The run course is poorly marked in places and extremely dangerous in others. And there are four races going on at the same time on the same course. They ought to hire IO to straighten things out. And congratulations to corn, SQRN and JD! And whoever else who ran yesterday!

I further horrified him by saying that I thought Derek and the Dominos was a 50s group lead by a fat black dude. It was pointed out to me that I was thinking of Fats Domino...

Friggin vog blew out the morning of the race. 2 things happen when that happens 1)wind. 2)heat. Got both. Run was never flat and hot on the golf course. Tried negative split but just couldn't. Started experiencing dizzyness for the first time ever at mile 10. Cruised slowly in. The end. KP thanks for the advice on th bike. Picked off a lot of folks coming back from hawi.
