KFC!?!? That was actually at this really neat place on the opposite side of this HUGE lake (the only lake in the world above sea level, I believe - used to be a volcano or a volcano was involved somehow) that we then jumped a boat to head across to get to our town of San Juan!! :-)

I know all you "real" members of the medicine world think all the EMT' and Paramedics are just a bunch of RN and MD wannabe's but this is a real nightmare for us also. I will respect other peoples opinions even when it has to do with their minor children. But don't think for a second I would have any reservations about testifying at a homicide trial if their "beliefs" killed the kid. Our oath is exactly the same. I am in the business of treating, but I also feel I need to respect others opinions to an extent. Guess that's why they encourage "call control".

Morning all, I don't know about prayer being just an adjunct to medicine. Prayer and spirituality is an integral part of the 14 Gordon's Health Practices that is the fundamental basis of Nursing diagnosis. We are taught in nursing school that spirituality, and a patient's religion must be respected. Pattern of Values and Beliefs for example, is part of Gordon's. May disagree, may want to persuade otherwise, but ultimately, must respect..:-)

We threw everything medicine had to offer at Kelly and then begged God to support her recovery as well. The 11 months of chemotherapy almost killed her. The only reason we stopped the chemo is because it would have killed her to continue. The concurrent radiation gave her 3rd degree burns and her skin came off in black chunks. It was the most painful thing I have ever witnessed. If I could have I would have had the chemo alongside her. I feel so badly for that boy and the physicians assigned to care for him.

Another bleeding ulcer patient with low blood pressure and significant blood loss refused endoscopy because she said God would stop the bleeding. I told her that if she was sure God didn't send me to stop the bleeding for him I would happily go on to the next patient. She signed consent for the procedure.

I transfused a 16 year old Jehovah's witness over the objections of his parents. He was exsanguinating from an ulcer. I stopped the bleeding but there was no way he would survive without the transfusion. I told him that he could get the transfusion against his parents wishes and take the rest of his life to wonder whether or not he actually damned his soul to hell, or he could take his chances with the hereafter in the next hour. His response: "Give me the goddamned blood!"

I feel sorry for that boy. His parents medical neglect may well have sealed his fate. If there were no accepted treatment for his condition or if the accepted treatment did not have a chance to cure him, I might feel differently. But, when parents stupidly interfere with life saving medical therapy over a religious belief, it's a tragedy.

I have to go back to work where I tend to stay away from those amazing 70-80-90 years olds because all I seem to manage to do for them is find some godawful disease that was asymptomatic and would have taken them painlessly while they slept one day but now we know about it so we try to cure it and make them miserable for about a month before they go attached to machines by a variety of tubes, catheters and wires under fluorescent lights surrounded by a flurry of uniformed people working furiously to try and prevent the inevitable.

I would say he gets extra credit (courage) for 53 on a touring bike. The thing that scares me is the possibility of equipment malfunction. I know too many elite and AGers who had been messed up or killed when bars or fork come apart.

I forgot about Carson. That is one of the greatest downhills in the world. About 20 miles long, as I remember. I even had to pass some slow a$$ traffic on that one. Don't think I hit 56, though. You can go at least 60 on the back side of Monitor down to 395. However, you might hit a loose cow on the road, as the famous Cow Lady did. Plus you have all those wobblers coming back up the hill. I did use my brakes on that one.
