FFO -BS! please pay close attention to the words "those events filled with typical weekend warriors" If you jump off the couch and do a triathlon CERTAINLY your at an increased risk for cardiac arrest if you smoke or have an inadvertent life style. BUT...if you train regularly with periodized increased intensity and volume your "physically capable" to do such events without incresed risk. 8)

Boy! This a bit of cheerful news. - - - April 2, 2009 (Orlando, Florida) - The risk of sudden cardiac death appears to be greater in triathlons than marathons, new research shows, and this risk is confined to the swim portion of the event. The risk of sudden cardiac death even exists in the shorter-distance triathlons, those events filled with typical weekend warriors. Presenting the results of the study here at the American College of Cardiology 2009 Scientific Sessions, Harris and colleagues report that the risk of sudden death in the triathlon was 1.5/100 000 participants, a "not-inconsequential" risk that is nearly double the risk of sudden death in marathon runners. Triathlons Growing in Popularity In this study, investigators studied the most recent years of participation--from January 2006 to September 2008--to accurately assess the risk to those participating in the events. During this time, there were 2846 triathlons in the US. Of the 922 810 participants, there were 14 deaths, with men more likely to die than women (11 males and 3 females died). Of these 14 deaths, 13 occurred during the swim portion of the race, and all were initially attributed to drowning. One triathlete died from a fall off his bike, and none died during the run portion of the race. The average age of those who died was 43 years. Autopsy reports obtained in six individuals who died during the swim, however, showed that four individuals had associated cardiovascular disease, including three with probable hypertrophic cardiomyopathy and one individual with dilated cardiomyopathy. This translated into a risk of sudden death of 1.5/100 000 participants. Comparatively, a study by Dr Donald Redelmeier (University of Toronto, ON) of more than three million marathon runners showed the rate of sudden cardiac death to be 0.8/100 000 participants [1]. 1. And strength training, definitely! By pre-diabetic, i'm assuming you mean Type II (eg., pre-adult onset or non-insulin dependent)? Then very often, yes, exercise is crucial (disclaimer: as long as the diabetes is under control and MD clears). Exercise improves activity of muscle glucose-transport proteins (mostly GLUT-4)which uptakes insulin.

We also are looking at cutting out wine and/or beer (except for one on the weekends). Considering that 6 oz of wine is about 300 calories, and the average glass is twice that, that would be an easy calorie loss not to drink during the week (5 x 600 =3000) or about a pound a week. That and getting the running going again is the plan for the next 16 weeks.

Date: Saturday May 2nd, 2009 8:13 Comment 182611
Laura of @ email: @
Swoosh, that is REALLY encouraging! I'm glad that you did that research. So, fundamentally, the causes of mid-life weight gain still amount to too many calories and lack of movement. Right?

Actually Laura, don't use middle-age as a fallback to weight gain. I did a fair bit of lit-search on it a couple years ago for a conference I was presenting at, and, there's really no strong support for the "my hormones are changing and so I'm going to gain weight" excuse. Basically, we just become less active. So yeah, go out and get your run done !

I learned after the weigh-in: 1) I need to put my a** to the leather, 2) I need to run lots, 3) I don't think spraying my swim goggles with Tilex is going to get rid of the mold that has grown on them in 3 years..so it's time for a new pair. And, that the newest drug test is the hair test..they cut your hair!!!! That is all.

Warning: Serious question that would like feedback on if anyone has a Cyclops Fluid Trainer. Does anyone else notice that it gradually gets harder as it gets warmed up? I start out and for the first 30 minutes I push like 150 watts easy and without changing gears over the next 30 minutes without changing cadence/gearing my watts increase to 180-185. Is this something that is inherent to the Cyclops Fluid Design? If so I would like to know what it is and how that works. It puzzles me. I don't like things changing without initiating it or knowing what makes it change. 8)

one of the lastest trends is orofice surgery to minimize external scarring and shorten recovery time. During a discussion on this it was my contention that there wouldn't be much interest for women in having their gall bladder removed vaginally. So I ask you ladies out there, would you let a surgeon remove your gall bladder through your hoohah?
