The "morning after," the most lingering concept from yesterday's events was in the welcoming remarks by Sen. Dianne Feinstein when she referenced the "peaceful transition of power, through ballots not bullets." What an amazing concept that I don't always appreciate. Nice to reflect on that for awhile, and how lucky we are to live in a democracy, particularly when there are constant reminders that even now not all of the world lives that way.

I don't hold any illusions that Obama is going to miraculously turn things around. rita - you don't actually HAVE to have faith in Obama keeping his promises. You can, if you like, behave as if he's not going to keep ANY of his promises (or that he will deliver on some but not others), and still do just as well depending on which promises he keeps. The trick is being able to guess, far enough in advance, which ones he's going to keep or not and how those outcomes will affect you.

In short, I'm not so much interested in the outcome of the election as I am in the dynamics of how it occurred. It has opened my eyes to a lot of things that I didn't understand were possible. Obama has surprised everyone (even himself, I think) in how exponentially his momentum has grown over the last several months. His only challenge is to keep enough of that momentum to make a bid for a second term.

most of the problems this country faces will need mass support and cohesiveness. I see today as useful in demonstrating that there is a large amount of that present and ready to go. Many, many faces....To side step today to save money would have done more harm than good. Sure, scarce money would have been saved but the value of building consensus or physically showing the support of the crowds and pomp and circumstance should far outway that. I saw it as an aknowlegment of where we have reached and a beginning to "okay now let's start working". I didn't see much of "looky here, we won and you didn't!" but saw a whole lotta "this is the start"...if that makes any sense...I dunno

my .02: I never voted for Obama because he was black, or to right a wrong. I think he is the most intellegent, articulate president since Kennedy and the most pragmatic since Truman. I believe he has deeply held values and high morals standards that he holds himself and the people around him accountable to. And which have been missing for a very long time. Unlike the defensive back scenario, I am impressed that Obama always thinks in terms of the team, the organization. He is the only president in the last 30 years to not make it about "Him". I especially liked the honest, sober assessment of our current situation and the challenge to America to grow up. It was a pep rally for the Team america, not an in your face "see I did it" kind of presence.

Sarah Palin made some dumb remark at the Rep convention to the effect that the only "experience" Obama had was as a community orgainizer. Well how do you think he won the White House?? He out orgainzied everyone. And where did he learn to bring people together? As a community orgainzer. He has an incredible network of some 13 million folks who are connected to his campaign in some fashion; many gave money (including me). But Barry O knows a thing or two about politics as well. He is keeping this list to himself. He is not sharing it with the Democratic party. He is not going to simply rely on the Dems having a majority in Congress. He has already threatened to veto a Demo bill he does not like. He is making sure he consults with Republicans. He knows how to get what he wants. Will he be successful? Time will tell. For the sake of our country, I hope so.

.02. Swing voters. No history on issues just how they feel at the moment kind of like marching...left right left right. I consider myself republican because of several staples along party lines. I don't vote based on novelty or flavor of the month. I give O the benefit of the doubt on certain issues but still disagree whole heartedly on a majority of his issues and proposed policies. All I can say is good luck. You filled this country with very high expectations so now is the time for actions. You can bich all you want about how bush left him with this mess yada yada yada but he wanted the friggin job so stop all your biching and start showing us something. Starting off with this grand celebration is not my idea of starting off with good intention. Kind of like when a defensive lineman does his job by sacking the quarterback than goes on a 5 minute look at me celebration. 8)

I gots lots of ideas in my head and heart and it will take time and action to sort out. I dont think Obama is the best thing since sliced bread nor that he will fix everything. He will fail and he will succeed. In the end, the most probable is more of the same at the Federal level. But yet I'm happy cause I feel that it will all at least be incrementally better than it has been for 8 years and better than it could have been with Palin/McCain. I jus got these happy butterflies in my gutt to replace the acidic ulcer feelings I've had since W's inaugeration. I am also very happy for african americans in our nation that finally feel represented. Even though I'm a white ass cracker I can feel their history and joy. Mostly I think I'm happiest because of economics and science and hope that they rule policy for awhile instead of "gut feeling" or "stickin' to my guns" style politics

I dunno roger. Depends on how you define 'fanatical' I think. I am typically a republican and voted democrat for the first time ever. I contributed money to a political campaign for the first time ever...more than once. I was excited about a election probably truly for the first time ever. So, personally, I'm a fanatic, yet I see we and us and we and us. Perhaps their on non-disenfranchised fanatics out there. If you see what you see on a consistent basis, it might mean you need to look around a bit more.

Date: Tuesday January 20th, 2009 13:05 Comment 171429
roger of ncw email: @
E - you have summed up what my own personal leading theory is on the Obama cult. The strongest advocates of Obama are those who feel the most disenfranchised - those who feel that they and their ideas have not been fairly treated. A consistent observation I've had during this election run was the vocabulary of those who were backing Obama so fanatically. They spoke in terms of "we" and "us" - not as a sense of community, but rather to distinguish themselves from "they" and "them" (the ones who they perceived to be in control).

I'm with clm on all this politcal stuff...Talk is cheap...Action speaks louder than words..If you see Obama as a black President..Then you have it all wrong..Plain and simple..He is OUR PRESIDENT..Period...Don't get me started on all these Civil rights issues..I was there also..
