Between now and the end of January, I have to do 25 hours of Mandatory Continuing Legal Education (MCLE) and report completion to the state bar. So do all other California attorneys having the last initial H through M. 4 hours have to be in legal ethics, one in substance abuse, and one in discrimination. The other 19 hours can be any accredited seminars of my choice. I had three years to collect those 25 hours, but like all of my colleagues, I have procrastinated. So right now, I am doing an on-demand web-based seminar. This one is on alcoholism. Think of it as like "online traffic school" for lawyers. Not much fun. But if I don't do it, I will lose my license to practice law, and therefore lose my value to my employer, and therefore lose my job, and therefore be unable to pay both my mortgage and my child support, and therefore lose both my house and my drivers license, and therefore become a burden on my wife, and therefore probably end up divorced and penniless and living in my parents' spare room, sleeping on a foam mattress in the den on top of the gun safe. So I'll continue to sit here and watch the boring man lecture me on alcoholism. Pretty much a no-brainer. ;-)

Smokestack lightning! Smoke signals by native americans were not done with blankets. They were done with moist grass bundles which were quickly removed. Perhaps once or twice. There was no long e-mail (smoke) messages. The signal location -- say half way up the hill -- might mean 'all is well'. Smoke at the top of the hill might mean 'we are in deep sh*t (like the Chargers).

Flew out of Omarrama in NZ this morning, but didn't see the Vimp family. Came in dead last (of the finishers, anyways) in an online soaring racing competition. A couple of guys had to land because they couldn't find lift, so I still ~beat~ them. It was a 225 km task. The winner finished about 70 km and 24 minutes ahead of me.

I'm kinda at home with a lousy internet connection, trying finish an intro to veterans status in 2009 for report out this month. While we certainly fuc*&ed up VietNam era vets twas nothing compared to now. 1/4 of Gulf war experiencing Gulf War Syndrome, 1/3 Afghan/Iraq vets with moderate to severe PTSD, Tramatic Brain Injury, Depression -- not counting the compounding effects of multiple deployments which have yet to really hit the system. 1/4 of women soldiers reporting sexual harrassment/assault trama. Excessive use of National Guard and reserves screwing up careers and families. Dishonerble discharges (i.e no benefits) for many soldiers probably manifesting misdiagnosed PTSD. VA says limited capacity to deal with the newer health problems -- geared towards aging 60 YRO+. The report will be the basis for reallocating local vets services funding in 2009-2011. Where to start?

There is a message there in the epitaths and I've known an old dood or two like that but the story and the heart make it clear. I was kinda uncomfortable how the universally white crowd laughed loudly at each rascist remark because I wonder if they understood if it was part of the moral of the movie or if they found it to be a comedy. I'm sure some in the crowd are misguided and found the race bashing funny. I dunno, maybe some was intended to be...either way, I think some of the laughers enjoyed it a little too much
