Now comes the congestion, hacking cough for like 10 minutes until something that resembles a masticated toll house cookie comes up, you hock it up, spit it out and you can breathe for about 10 minutes before it starts all over again. :-(

So, here's a bike question: my Computrainer is vintage 1998. Hopefully, the handlebar controller will still work. If it doesn't, what is a good, inexpensive indoor trainer to buy? I cannot afford a new Computrainer, budget for a replacement (if necessary) is about $150.

E, I'm an IM hack, but my first year I was in really good shape (for me). First 11 miles of marathon were the easiest I had ever run, I was feeling GREAT. But then Ogopogo jumped on my back, and the rest gets really hazy. But I love that course, and especially the "lonely" out and back marathon. Wouldn't have it any other way!

swoosh! The uphills were difficult, and we walked most of every one, but what felt worse to me was the DOWNHILLS. I think that's what ended my day, I really took a pounding. Some were so steep I had to walk them, and that was difficult to do. Ok, I'm a wimp, I know.

Good poem. I have unfinished biz at IMC. Just when I thought I was makin progress on that course I went one year in really good shape and melted down so bad it left a stain on my soul. I've been in the "racing for fun" category ever since.

Only "resolution" I make is "vowing to come back more fit", from a poem about IMC: ... Some of us can run, our legs are fresh and strong. And some of us are done, we wonder what went wrong. Some of us can win the race, be first across the line. Going at a blistering pace, a final burst to go sub nine. But some of us are having trouble, this day not meant to be. Some of us are seeing double, and will need several IV's. Some of us are forced to quit, our day coming to an end. Vowing to come back more fit, but first, some time to mend....

Tina, Last year "ran" the 50k at Afton, but due to injury and illness, wasn't prepared for it. I did about 30k and called it a day. But I was "running" with Lynn and Sue from IL, and I learned 3 things. 1) Walk the hills 2) Be patient when someone is telling a story, because it's a VERY LONG DAY, and long stories help the miles go away 3) Ultra people are good people.

FFO - Pain is subjective, and can be influenced by chemicals or individual tolerance. The system I teach is based on injury, rather than pain compliance. http://www.targetfocustraining.com/ It's useless in social situations (like if someone takes your parking spot or your bar stool). But it's lifesaving if you're in a situation like the Virginia Tech shooting, or the attack in Mumbai. E me if you'd like to learn more or take a live seminar.

I-Man - Not to belabor the point, what you are looking for here is INSTANT pain, not so much damage. You stop the attack as quickly as possible and then inflict more damage if necessary. Shins are instantly painful, the groin not so much in a combat situation. Or so I have been told. I'll bet clm would know.

E - Nut sack is OK target, but a good kick to the shins will stop almost anyone. A little higher and you can take out the knee. If in close and cozy, inverted leopard punch or grab to larynx is very effective as well.

I catch evil doers the old fashioned way- I become one to blend in then just before they do the evil deed I reveal my true character and end the evil doing usually by employing a spinning scissor kick to the nut sack region of said evil doer
