Tina, I'm glad Sahara is doing good. When I first read about it, I got worried because is was the same symptom that my wife's parents just had with their 9 yr old lab. It turned out to be a torn ACL.

My wife is now a slacker;-) I know, I've done an Ironman but taking care of her, two dogs, myself, working, trying to run occasionally, and all the other daily life tasks are kicking my ass. I know I'm a wimp because a lot of you do a lot more but I'm fat, slow and old.

Hey Tina, my wife was released from the hospital and she is on bedrest, everything is stable with both. I hardly slept in two weeks, I knew I was going to have to help out a lot more after the birth but I didn't know I was going to have to do everything before the birth even happens.

ok, you know what's sorta funny? Yesterday, all the shoe pics of bush had the dude next to him just standing there doing nothing like he was all "shoe at bush, whatever, I hear ya"... Suddenly, all the pics today have the dude with his arm trying to protect bush from the shoe.

According to Wikipedia: "Velveeta is the brand name of a processed cheese product first made in 1918 by Swiss immigrant Emil Frey of the Monroe Cheese Company in Monroe, New York. In 1923, The Velveeta Cheese Company was incorporated as a separate company, and was sold to Kraft Foods in 1927."

Velveeta was conceived by a marketing flunkie in desparate need to please his bosses at Kraft and General Mills. In a pinch to spiel a new food substitute to add to the coming year's new inroduced product line, the flunkie pulled a flier outta his arse and suggested lets take a very simple food item and make it difficult but in so doing let's break it down into its basic macro units and reconstruct it with man made substances at a greatly reduced production and unit cost. The flunkie went further and outdid himself when he ended with the point that since no actual food remained in the new cheese like substance the shelf life could be significantly increased and the product could be manufactured in a cheap as possible location with no actual geographic tie to the comodities and animals and farmers that actually make cheese. The bosses were highly pleased because the fake food division would thus make their profit margins for decades to come and Velveeta would be introduced and marketed on a grand scale for everything from ballgame nachos to aerosol cheese sprays all in nicely colored packaging free from bacteria and spoil. Yer welcome, once again.

Rayman - There is a farm to the north of here on the road to Sacramento where Valveeta cows were frist bred. They used to be called "Long Cows." But that did not sell a loet of cheese. After some tweaking, the cows started laying pieces of flat cheese. The rancher loved his wife Valveeta so he named the cheese after her. Kraft bought them out and the rest is history.

Spam exists as a meat substitute originated at a time that real beef and other table meats were beyond the budget of most hard strapped Americans who were scrimping to buy bonds and recycle aluminum for the War. The fine meat substitute retains its prsence on the tables of many college students, surfers, and hobos because of it's salty flavoring, cheap store price, and lack of need to actually cook it. Plus it just sounds delicious even though it is made from the parts of a pig that are not easily harvestable by even the best butchers. Eat the whole of the pig! Yer welcome

No, I hid the Nutella to prevent such an occurrence. She's still complaining because she hasn't found it. (It's under the Christmas tree but don't tell her.) Not sure why someone invented Nutella to begin with--of course, I don't know why Spam and Velveeta exist either.

I'm choosing to go deep now, maybe as an experiment more than anything, instead of waiting until I must. I know consumers are supposed to spend now instead of retrench as a whole to keep the economy viable. If we all maximize our own self interest and retrench the economy will dive deeper than it should. But no worries, I was not a large spending part of the economy anyway so my self interest maximization will have negligable effect on the economy. Do not use me as an example to follow though. Go spend or we are all doomed! :)

I don't mean this to sound cynical but this coming severe downturn may be exactly what our culture needed and we will be better off for it in the long run. I mean that in a positive way and wish nobody hardship or strugle. I just belive we were losing our core values and a few key special interests were starting to run away with who we are as a nation. It will be interesting to watch over the next 5 years. Stay hard and persevere my friends!

When I worked as an examiner for the Fed, I spent a LOT of time in many many North and South Dakota towns. Each time we went to a town, we'd spend two weeks there. That's enough time to really get to know the people of the town (there typically aren't many people in a town). I LOVED my time spent there because the people are so awesome and down to earth :)

Re that simple life, one thing that I DO like about it, is that it switches the focus from what you think you need based upon what others tell you that you need, to a focus on what really counts. And, you learn how to say "No", possibly the most difficult thing about starting a simple life. :-)

noel, I thought the coverage was very good. Really liked the women's race. You can feel the overwhelming respect for Wellington from her fellow competitors. On the mens side; I suppose they can only follow so many athletes at once in a detailed way but some more coverage of Crowie early on would have been nice. He executed a near perfect race as did Eneko and they never really focused on the best triathletes (more on cyclists). On the AG side, I love the SEAL team guys, but there are some incredible AGers who work 40-60hrs a week who find time to train, qualify and go 9-10hrs. I'd like to see those stories over the Navy SEAL guys. I can't think of a tougher job than being a SEAL team member and going to the hills of Pakistan to hunt OBL, so them doing 11:30 at IM doesn't seem as note worthy. I worked most of the day in the CAF transitions and spent some time in meetings earlier in the week with them as we planned logistics and paired up into a buddy system (into water, out of water, in and out of T1 and T2, etc). I was assigned to a blind fellow whose dad died of ALS one year earlier. Really touched me. These guys were incredible courageous. I thought that part was well done. Overall, very good stuff.
