Alynn, there is a great likelihood that there is no crack waiting for me at the postoffice. Mail, especially from Ohio, doesn't get here in 3 days! Mail to Bishop gets routed through San Bernardino, then Fresno, back down to Bakersfield, then to Mojave, up to Reno, then over to Modesto, where it's hitched to a mule for the rest of the journey over the sierras. Besides, the PO closes in 4 minutes. I can't get down the hill that fast :-/ I'll get there for sure on Wednesday though! :-)

The snow was silent this morning...? Perhaps it was pristine, with no tell tale tracks, allowing the snow to keep it's secrets? Or it was a secret snow, stealthfully silent in the night, and you awoke to the wonderment of Mother Nature's new blanket? Or maybe the snow gently melted upon touching the Earth, leaving no trace of it's crystaline perfection?

tina...that much touted $70+/hr figure for current workers includes costs of pension and benefits of retired workers (legacy costs). since honda, toyota, etc haven't been in the us long enough to build a large retirement population, and their japanese workers enjoy the benefit of government paid healthcare, this puts the big three at a huge disadvantage in costs. factor into that the hundreds of millions of incentive dollars plus huge tax breaks awarded to the foreign auto companies by states such as alabama, tennessee, ets to locate in their states. as far as actual in difference wages and benefits paid to big three employees vs foreign auto co employees, the true figure is less than $5/hr. subtract the uaw dues and it shrinks even more. take the uaw out of the equation and all wages will fall dramatically, since the honda, toyota, et al, salaries were set, based on the big three's level.

Fact is the Big three are paying benefits to literally hundreds of thousands of retirees. As of a year ago, Toyota's entire U.S. operation had less than 1,000 retirees. Compare that to a company like General Motors, which has been around for more than a century and which supports literally hundreds of thousands of former workers and spouses.

Date: Friday December 12th, 2008 11:24 Comment 167227

I'm not saying that the UAW doesn't have any warts... But to say that it's the cost of the average UAW salary/Benefits is not accurate.

That's not a true story Tina. That figure you are quoting is extremely disingenuous. It has the legacy costs of hundreds of thousands of retiree benefits added into it.

I'm not anti-union, just anti uaw. Average UAW salaries and benefits per hour for the big three...$75. Average salary and benefits for Honda, toyota employees, et al...$43. True story. And...honda and toyota make a hell of a better car.

without the uaw and the afl/cio very few would have employer funded health insurance, paid vacations, retirement plans, safe working conditions, decent wages for blue collar workers, or any rights at all in the workplace. the unions fought and got these things that many non-union workers now enjoy. the average executive salary to labor salary ratio in the 50s-60s was 40:1. now that it's more like 400:1, people are screaming that labor is overpaid....go figure.

Jan and I had a major physical fight over Al's crack. I wound up getting less. It was gone in 60seconds.

Did anyone else just air drum a rockin'back up to vimps guitar including the abrupt ending to let the guitar fade out? No? I'm sorry, then.

Hubby does have a guitar solo or two tonight. After practicing the solo for the Stevie Wonder song the other night, he says, "Honey, I hate to break this to you, but I ain't got no funk.". I can't say I was shocked to hear that.
