FFO of . email: @: KP - In 1991 we lived a block outside the evacution zone but were told to be ready to go if given the word. I took off on my bike so see the fire line which was only a few blocks from our house. (The worst part of the fire was up in the higher elevations. The area was closed off but I knew of a back road. I went up the road and saw a black wall of oily looking smoke with a couple of firehoses on the ground also going up the road under the wall of smoke. I figured that this was no place for me to be so I went home. Nancy had our little Mazda 323 packed to the gills with all our essential stuff. She had hours to pack so she even included her rock collection. We did not have to evacuate. A week later I got around police lines again into Hiller Highlands, one of the hardest hit. It looked like an atomic bomb had hit the place. The tallest thing I saw was a burned out washing machine. Unbelievable.

Carpinteria is 4 miles from Montecito and the 1971 Romero fire occured when I was in high school. Montecito has a bad history of fires prior to the current one: Coyote Fire 1964 - Romero Fire 1971 - Sycamore Fire 1977 - Paint Fire 1990. As a result -- 1,042 structures burned during these 4 fires and 12 fatalities occurred (11 fire fighters & 1 civilian).

FFO of . email: @: Last year it was North County that was burning, wasn't it? Or was thar earlier this year? Everytime I see fires like this, I think of the Oakland Hills fire in '91. It was very windy up here today also. It rained about a week ago so things are still somewhat damp. But it would not take long for it to dry out if these winds keep up. A couple of years ago Aero and I were riding through that area around Monticito.

But overall I'm a Bond freak so it's a must see for me. Goin again in a coupla weeks to reabsorb it.

The race itself was great, won by Hellriegal (after finishing 2nd the previous 2 years), followed by Zach (Helmut!! Need Helmut!), Leder in 3rd, and Reid in 4th. Chris Legh DNF 50 yds. from the finish. Women: Heather Fuhr was 1st, Lori Bowden 2nd, Fernanda Keller 3rd (again), and the infamous crawl with Wingnut and Sian Welch. PNF DNF on the run, and Natasha Badmann DNF on the bike. Featured Baywatch's Alexandra Paul doing her 1st IM, and Julie Moss coming back for a 2nd, complete with clips of her historic crawl in '81. With Mark Allen providing his personal zen philosophy of the race and the Island. And Bob Jordan, whose daughter Emily was lost to leukemia. Complete with music from Titantic, and The Verve's Bittersweet Symphony as Heather catches and passes Wingnut. Senses overwhelmed with images and sound, sweat and tears (no blood)dripping down my face.... Today was a good day!
