I went on my first civil rights march when I was 18. I have been involved in progressive politics my whole life. I never thought in my life time I would see anyone like Barack Obama become President. I am filled with hope and dread at the same time. This is an historic period we are passing through. As Tom said below, talk is cheap and it is action that matters. Right now things look pretty good.

I think Obama will greatly surprise the skeptics on the page. You will see Republicans in his cabinet. He is an honest family man. And even the commentators noted the soberness in his acceptance speech.

Roger - beg to differ with you on america's status in invading Iraq post 9/11. When we were attacked on 9/11 our world support was universal. When Bush junior attacked Iraq, not only was most of the world divided http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Governments'_pre-war_positions_on_invasion_of_Iraq, the UN was divided, millions of people world wide went into the streets in protest in the largest public outcry not seen since VietNam. There was no meaningful "coalition of the willing" other than Britain's Toiny Blair.

Roger - my optimism arises because so many Americans showed up at the polls yesterday to cast their vote (over 82% in LA alone). My optimism arises because I think more people should take an interest in the political process and that happened yesterday. I hope these people actually researched and learned about the issues. I hope that these new voters will stay involved. Did they? Will they? Not all of them. Nevertheless, the idealist in me is unbelievably excited that so many people felt compelled to come out and make their voices heard (and that goes for every voter, not just those who agree with me). It was truly an historic election. That is a fact. I am hopeful that Obama can indeed bring about some positive change. I am not idolizing him nor do I think he is anything but a human being. In fact, I worry that expectations are so high that he will have a hard time pleasing anyone. But I think his message of hope and change is needed in America right now and I wish him tremendous success. I want to see him succeed and I want to see his optimism filter out around the world. Call me crazy. ;-)

JD, When Oprah calls Obama "The One", and Louis Farrakhan calls him "The Messiah", who are we to disagree? When there are documented cases of people fainting at Obama rallies, we should not doubt Tina's exuberant, enthusiastic support of him, because it is representitive of many. They might not have detailed reasons for their support, but are swept up in the torrent of change. Obama rock star? You bet. Demigod? Of course. Embrace naivette, Obama is no man, he is our Savior! IMO, Obama has many attributes I admire, and I'm proud he will be our next President. I share Tina's hope for change, just not her enthusiasm.

Boop - I am not saying you shouldn't be optimistic. I'm just saying that if the basis for your optimism is event-driven (i.e., that Obama won the election), that optimism may fade when other events occur (e.g., that Obama does something that you disagree with). The plain truth is that Obama is just a man, although people are currently treating him like he is a symbol. No man can ever live up to the reputation of being a symbol. Ever. Just like President Bush was viewed as a symbol when we invaded Iraq. He acheived the highest job approval ratings in history, and people on this page were 100% behind him. But somehow, our optimism about Bush faded. Because he's merely a man - not a symbol. I'm not trying to bum your high, time will naturally take care of that. I'm just encouraging you to base your optimism on something other than a mere man. ;-)

Don't worry, Sqrn. The fight for same-sex marriage isn't over. As I said before, this is primarily a constitutional law issue - it just came up in the context of same-sex marriage. Because it is a constitutional law issue, there will very soon be Federal lawsuits seeking to enjoin the amendment. That is, even though Prop 8 looks like it will pass, any same-sex couple who got married in California will have standing to sue the state to prevent them from actually making the amendment to the state Constitution. They will argue many things, including that the amendment would be a violation of the equal protection clause of the 14th amendment of the Federal Constitution (after which our state constitution's equal protection clause was modeled). They will argue that it deprives them of their property (by taking away the tax benefits of marriage) without due process of law under the 4th amendment. They will argue that it violates the "full faith and credit" clause of the Constitution because same-sex marriage is recognized in other states but not in California. Separately, a bill will likely be introduced into the US Congress to define marriage uniformly across the nation, arguing that Congress has a right to do so under the interstate commerce clause of the US Constitution. It will take a couple of years to sort that out, and it is possible that a Federal judge will tell our state government NOT to apply the amendment to the state Constitution while it is all being sorted out so as to keep the status-quo in case the Federal lawsuits are successful (so those who did get married won't have to get un-married, only to be allowed to be remarried again). So, again, it is important that we have perspective. Prop 8 is just the context in which the issue of who decides (state judges vs. state residents vs. state legislatures vs. federal judges vs. US Congress) is arising. It is years from being over.

I believe Ellen would want No for prop 8. I just love how this state who has a divorce rate of over 50% feels that they have the right to decide who can and can't get married. Man and women have set such a fine example of marriage for our children. Equal rights for all? Clearly not.

Roger - I have perspective. America's image has definitely gone up tonight. Whether it will stay there or not, I don't know. As someone who has voted in every Presidential election since turning 18, I was really excited today to see so many people come out to exercise their right to vote. It's nice to feel optimistic and hopeful for a moment. I hope people stay involved. But time will tell. In the meantime, I'm going to stay positive and hope for the best!

I never thought I would see this in my lifetime...let's roll on the female thing next eh? this feels really good. I am outwardly a white boy who makes a living taking care of the issues of predominantly rich white people. My grandfather was an extremely rascist white man from a farm in Nebraska after coming here from Sweden. Part of my family is white from liberal Amsterdam. Part is black from the island of Trinidad. A large part is only a generation or two removed from Sanora, Mexico via the Rio Grande. All immigrants. After seeing this tonight and letting it finally sink in that it can happen, I am feeling closer to my family and very much proud to be American. I don't feel like changing other people's minds much, can appreciate and accept that we all feel differently, ...aw crap, nevermind...I jus feel whole and happy and thank you voters!

CLM - I agree. Excellent speech by McCain...and he might've had my vote as well with a different running mate. KP - also agree! It's exciting to see that everyone has opportunity here...and that is what America is all about. Jen - a woman will be President one day! Even though I didn't like Palin, her appearance as the VP candidate on a major party ticket was historic as well. Like Laura, I'll be keeping tomorrow's newspaper!!

besides, I'd substitute the word judge except that aren't all judges ex lawyers and their primary task is to listen to opposing lawyers talk aboot stuff...and they are all wearin suits and capes and stuff. When it all hits the streets, when it's gay on gay action, when it all has a face and a name- that's when I'm interested. Until then it stinks of highly paid freedom stealing with fancy words like Wehereas and Therefore and Heretofor....jus let dudes do what they want; s'not like they are going to steal yer wife or children.

E - your post is absolutely correct. Except you should substitute the word "judge" for "lawyer." NO on Prop 8 means that you're letting a judge tell you what your rights are and are not, rather than the constitution.
