Seen with leftist leaning attorney and her former "native" rights socialist buddies (she calls them former clients.) Even talked her into leaving the country for sex. Refuses to discuss past associations with corporate attorneys on internet "chat' sites. Palls around geologists, land use planners, IT professionals. Doesn't know how many bikes he owns. Some good comments on time management. One thing that has worked for me is every Sunday night, sitting down with the planner and looking ahead to what must be accomplished the next week. If easy projects can be knocked off early in the week, that leaves room to deal with the unexpected. And, there are always unexpected items, no matter what one does for a living. Getting up a half an hour earlier on Mondays also really seems to get the week off to a better start.

Steve "Doc" Carslon passed away last night. He was a Vietnam vet who did two tours as a medic. He and his wife founded "Operation Hero Comfort" out of the front room of their fifth-wheel. They sent thousands of care packages out, spending thousands of dollars of their own money to make sure our fighting men and women knew they were appreciated. Doc did not want them to feel like he did when he came home from Vietnam. Doc was kind, loving, would give you the shirt off his back or his last beer. What will I miss most? The heartfelt hug I always got when I needed it most. so tonight, if you enjoy a beer, raise a glass to a true hero, my friend Doc.

I suppose that brings up one of the best known secrets of time management: ONLY work on the stuff that is truly important. ONLY. Everything else will either eventually become important (indicating that you misjudged its importance initially - learn from that lesson), or disappear. The only trick is judging what is truly important. That's what separates effective people from merely organized people. Don't forget that your family/marriage/health is even more important than you initially thought, so ALWAYS place those tasks as the first/highest priority. Seriously. Since my divorce, I changed my family priorities and I actually work from home one to three afternoons a week and spend that time with my kids. I block it out on my calendar and tell people that I'm not available to take calls. It doesn't seem to have hampered my career any. Of course, my job could all fall apart next week. But if it does, at least I won't be wishing I'd spent more time with my kids. ;-)

Tonight is "Organize Yer Friggin' Life Night" at the Martin house. Basically, that involves opening a few beers, grabbing a pencil and paper, walking from room to room to think about what you need to do, writing it down, prioritizing it, flushing the stuff that is low priority, figuring out the steps you need to do to accomplish the high priority stuff. Then sit down and watch Entourage with a good buzz going knowing that the previous 30 minutes was time well spent.

He'd prolly make a great Pres and he's not all annoying and whiney like Palin or grouchy, stiff, angry, and closed minded like McCain. That's the beauty of our Constitutional government, Sqrn. We all get to vote and my vote counts no more than yours. I'm a huge fan of that. I'm also a huge fan of the free interchange of ideas. I, personally, do not fear discussions about emotionally charged subjects. Indeed, I think the only way to resolve them is to talk about them. But I respect your opinion not to talk about anything that makes you uncomfortable. ;-)

Here's the thing about Prop. 8. In the late 1960's, the California state constitution was amended to provide for equal protection of all residents under the law. And there exist a few state judges in California who, last year, have interpreted those equal protection laws in the state Constitution to provide for a right of same-sex couples to marry. Because the nature of our Constitutional government is that the people make the Constitution and the judges interpret it, the only way to correct a judge's interpretation of the constitution is to amend the constitution to make it clear to the judge what the people really mean. Proposition 8 is such an attempt. It is an attempt (by those who believe that the equal protection clauses of the California State Constitution have been misinterpreted) to amend that Constitution to make sure that it can not be construed to cover same-sex marriage. So, YOUR vote on Prop. 8 should reflect whether YOU think that the equal protection clauses of the California State Constitution were intended to provide for a right of same-sex couples to marry. I personally do not believe that they were so intended. I personally believe that in the 1960's, the people of the state of California who voted for the equal protection amendments did NOT intend for them to convey a right of same-sex couples to marry, but rather were intending to eliminate racial and female discrimination. In fact, I think that same-sex marriage was not even on the voters' minds back then, and had they been able to look into the future to see how their amendment was going to be interpreted, they would have taken steps to prevent that interpretation. In other words, I do not believe that the right of same-sex people to marry has EVER existed, or sprang into being with the equal protection clause, or sprang into being last year. Therefore, I intend to vote YES on Prop. 8 in order to correct what I think is a misinterpretation of the equal protection clauses of the State Constitution. I believe that will bring us back to the intent of the law. You may have your own beliefs about whether same-sex marriage is valid or invalid. But that would be a different conversation that this one. This conversation is simply about Constitutional law.
