After the flight Sunday, I spent two hours yesterday morning putting the data logger in the glider I was going to fly. I was ready to go, and was ready for takeoff when I decided conditions weren't quite right for what I wanted to do. So I pulled off the flight line and let one of the other pilots take it. A while later, the plane I usually fly landed, and I decided to take it without the logger. Oh well. I've borrowed a portable barograph for the next couple of days to record my altitude. Luckily, my ~new-to-me~ glider has one built in.

The flight would also have qualified as a soaring ~Diamond~ flight for altitude gain. That's a subsequent height gain of at least 5000 metres from your low point after tow release. No data logger, so that doesn't count, either. Sunday, I had a flight that would have qualified as a Gold altitude gain - 3000m. I made it up to 18,500' on that flight. Again, no data logger...

I took some video of the turbulance that occurs while flying in the rotor cloud (generated from the mountain lee wave conditions). I took it right after releasing from the tow. The rotor cloud can have quite rough downflowing air on the downwind portion of the cloud, in the neighbourhood of 2000' - 3000' per minute. The upwind portion of the cloud can have the same going UP. That's the portion I videoed. The glider is bouncing and shaking all over the place and you can see the variometer(an instrument that tells me how fast I'm climbing / decending) at the limit of it's up t\rate of climb. The variometer also has an audio component that has a high pitched beep that gets faster the higher the rate of climb. It sounds like a whir, it's climbing so fast.

News from the glidiing world. Yesterday I was fortunate enough to claim the unofficial highest glider flight in Canada this year, so far. I reached an altitude of 26,200' ASL in a flight of 3:52. I spent over 2.5 hours above 20,000'. It was incredible! :-) If there had been a data logger onboard, it would have been official. There was another glider about 1000' below with a data logger that could vouch that he saw me above him, but that doesn't count. That's okay with me, though, because I know I was there. I took a picture of the altimeter around 26,100' or so, for my own photo album. I love this sport. :-)
